He's just 19 years old, but British singer-songwriter Jake Bugg is already a critical sensation back home with songs of raw hooks and attitude, as ready for sidewalk busking as for a big Coachella stage. The sound is a collision of modern U.K. folk-pop and ancient skiffle, with bits of Buddy Holly melody and Billy Bragg bite. On the self-explanatory "Seen It All," Bugg sings of the unglamorous life of pills and violence he's seen amid the Nottingham housing estates, with wisdom earned and witnessed splayed on the cobblestones and concrete. "I've seen the light, but not the kind I would have liked," he sings on one of 14 tracks from his debut, released this week in the U.S., just in time for his desert unveiling.
