The Review Perry
April 2, 2013 9:35 AM ET| Dave DiMartino
It struck me the other day that the human brain only has so much space inside it--only so much room for a music fan like myself to dutifully store the name of the bass player in Spooky Tooth, or the correct chronological sequence of all those Peter Gabriel albums with the same title, or the name of each rapper in Bone Thugs-n-Harmony—before it folds into itself. And then come the data leaks. Within the last week: 1) I forgot the PIN number for the checking account I have had since 1992... | More »

In The Mode!
March 26, 2013 5:35 PM ET| Dave DiMartino
In a given week, if I select the most noteworthy new releases for this blog--albums that either will sell the most (few) or are exceptionally interesting (fewer)—I’m not above pretending Celtic Thunder is Celtic Frost, that Josh Groban has devoted an entire album to the works of Pink Floyd, or that any artist named Dog Bite deserves a review simply because of his wonderful name! Rare are the times I actually care about all 10 albums! No need to worry, though. As long as Lil Wayn... | More »

The Man Who Fell In Worth!
March 19, 2013 5:20 PM ET| Dave DiMartino
Apologies for skipping last week’s blog: A busy week vacationing in Miami, then another in Austin, Texas for the recent South By Southwest confab, kept me away from my computer and thus any means whatsoever for expressing rational thought! Major regrets? That I could not give the wonderful new David Bowie album the timely welcome it deserves, nor discuss the very notion of a new album by Bon Jovi, nor—worst of all—use Twitter to alert the masses that any particular artist w... | More »

No Experience Needed!
March 5, 2013 4:35 PM ET| Dave DiMartino
It’s just one week prior to the annual South By Southwest conference, that yearly gathering held in Austin, Texas, at which today’s biggest and brightest talents congregate, perform before an enlightened and enthused audience, then go about their business as their careers then soar to stratospheric heights! Also, some musicians play! This week’s new releases are a great reminder of that which awaits all of us attendees-to-be: Distinguished oldsters, up-and-coming newbies, ... | More »

Amok: Not To Be Spelled Backwards!
February 26, 2013 4:28 PM ET| Dave DiMartino
I’m embarrassed to note that I forgot to watch the Oscars last night--so I missed seeing Adele, Shirley Bassey and maybe a few other people I cared about, not to mention what was apparently a tasteful tribute to “boobs,” which I deeply regret. And while it’s true I didn’t see a single film that was up for any award whatsoever—between you and me, I usually go to the movies maybe twice every summer, in Massachusetts—I’m thrilled that music played... | More »

Thunder And Lightning!
February 20, 2013 5:06 PM ET| Dave DiMartino
One of the major benefits of today’s out-of-kilter pop scene—where it’s entirely conceivable that the best-selling artists of the moment are likely to have a shelf-life of months, rather than years—is that today’s most sophisticated music fans can go about their business having absolutely no opinion about the latest works by Justin Timberlake, Rihanna, or Beyoncé and still sound like they know what they’re talking about. Especially when they use big... | More »

Is That A Bullet In Your Pocket?
February 12, 2013 3:57 PM ET| Dave DiMartino
Reviewing the week’s new releases is always tough the day after the Grammy Awards have taken place! After spending last night spellbound by the raw talents assembled onstage—by definition the prior year’s very finest—how can any new release hope to measure up? It’s easy! I’ve taken all 10 of the albums below, dressed them in the finest contemporary gowns, given them colorful and creative manicures, and played each and every one of them after re-watching m... | More »

Groban Up, In Public!
February 5, 2013 3:25 PM ET| Dave DiMartino
One of the marvels of today’s interconnected age may be the fact that writers who once wrote articles and often waited as much as three months to get feedback about them now merely have to consult Twitter to see where they stand! Thus, less than 24 hours after writing last week’s much-admired post about the latest works by rockers Hatebreed and Justin Bieber, I was greeted by tweets such as: *"@DaveDiMartino what the hell does this have to do with the album? Sad. Just sad.&rdquo... | More »

I Beliebe To My Soul!
January 29, 2013 5:51 PM ET| Dave DiMartino
They say that age brings wisdom--and so it is that more than a few of the older among us chuckled when younger music fans were puzzled by the reaction met by this week’s announcement of the Coachella Festival lineup! While the appearances of both Blur and the Stone Roses might have approached the heralding of the Second Coming to those of a certain age, the simultaneous appearance of a ”Who Are The Stone Roses” Tumblr asked by those even younger shocked those stunned by who... | More »
