  • Q&A: Gaslight Anthem's Brian Fallon on Big Ambitions, Bonding With Fans

    August 8, 2012 1:40 PM ET
     |  Dan Hyman

"It is what it is." Brian Fallon likes this phrase. Chatting with Rolling Stone backstage at Lollapalooza Sunday after the Gaslight Anthem played before an estimated 20,000 fans, the 32-year-old frontman says it several times. The seeming indifference doesn't necessarily jibe with his hard-ass rock star persona, but as Fallon puts it, he's done trying to please: "You can't placate people," he says. On Handwritten, the Gaslight Anthem's new album, Fallon unspools his usual...  | More »

  • Q&A: At the Drive-In on Their Reunion Tour, Aging in Rock & Roll

    August 7, 2012 1:45 PM ET
     |  Rolling Stone

At the Drive-In's acrimonious break-up in 2001 seemed to doom the group's chances of a reunion, but against the odds, they announced their return in January of this year. Just a few hours before performing a ferocious performance to a surging, enthusiastic crowd at Lollapalooza's Red Bull stage – just the 10th show of their nascent tour –  Rolling Stone spoke with drummer Tony Hajjar and lead singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala about forgiveness, adjusting to a new era...  | More »

After dicey weather dominated the first two days of Lollapalooza, Sunday was pure bliss in Chicago: Not only was there a pleasant breeze blowing in from Lake Michigan – in marked contrast to the blistering heat Friday and violent thunderstorms that prompted organizers to evacuate and briefly suspend the festival Saturday – there was killer music on eight stages all day long. "Damned if we didn't get lucky with the weather tonight," Jack White said, surveying the sp...  | More »

Rolling Stone's Rock Room party on Saturday helped revitalize Lollapalooza's tired and waterlogged attendees with sets from Bombay Bicycle Club, Yellow Ostrich and Women Who Rock contest finalists Rita Ora and Karmin. The amenities at the Studio Paris club weren't too shabby, either – free mojitos, burgers and a fresh oyster bar. "This show is different than any other show we've played, just with the never-ending stream of waiters offering you milk and cookies or vo...  | More »

  • Red Hot Chili Peppers, Avicii Battle Severe Storms at Lollapalooza

    August 5, 2012 10:55 AM ET
     |  Dan Hyman

It was a scene straight out of The Day After Tomorrow: a sea of confused, disgruntled people flooding the streets of Chicago, left to wonder about their fate. The cause of this mayhem: severe thunderstorms, which temporarily forced the evacuation of the second day of Lollapalooza on Saturday. All was not lost, however: after a nearly three-hour delay, festival officials reopened the gates and Lolla was officially back on. The suspension did have some irreparable effects. Several performances...  | More »
