  • SXSW 2014's Comedy Highlights: From Bill Cosby to 'Portlandia'

Large-scale music festivals like Coachella and Bonnaroo have always had a soft spot for comedy, with stand-ups and alt-comedy pioneers having become a more integrated presence on the outdoor-fest circuit over the past decade. South by Southwest, on the other hand, has usually relegated the funny business to its film section and the occasional showcase. But at last week's SXSW, where a robust comedy selection ran alongside the music, film and interactive programming in Austin, Texas ...  | More »

Tyler, the Creator was arrested in Austin on Saturday for allegedly inciting a riot during South by Southwest, the Associated Press reports. Police told the news agency that during a performance on Thursday, the Odd Future rapper had exhorted fans to push their way past employees controlling entrance to the venue, which was already at capacity. Local news station KXAN reports that Tyler had yelled into the crowd waiting outside the Scoot Inn, "All y'all outside the gates, y'all pus...  | More »

  • Lady Gaga Defends Vomit Performance as Art

    March 14, 2014 4:00 PM ET
     |  Kory Grow

The dichotomy between art and commerce was the major theme of Lady Gaga's South by Southwest keynote address Friday. Whether she was addressing questions about "selling out" by allowing a snack company to sponsor her performance-art concert Thursday night – and deflecting those questions with a call for artists to "sell in," while beating her hand against her heart – or decrying the amount of expectations placed on her versus other artists when it came to her most recent albu...  | More »

  • 5 Things We Learned at SXSW Interactive 2014

    March 14, 2014 3:05 PM ET
     |  Mark Yarm

South by Southwest Interactive, once the nerdy kid brother of the SXSW music festival, has grown up to be Charles Atlas-strong. Since 2007 — the year Twitter broke — attendance at the Austin interactive fest has grown nearly fivefold to more than 30,000. Old-timers will grouse that SXSWi has morphed from a place for tech startups to share knowledge and innovations to an overly commercial clusterfuck. But the 2014 edition, which wrapped up earlier this week, was still capable of el...  | More »

  • Soundgarden Revisit Classic Album at SXSW

     |  Steve Appleford

Things got super-heavy on night three of the inaugural iTunes Festival at SXSW in Austin last night, as Soundgarden dove back into the thundering grooves of 1994's Superunknown, performing the career-defining album in full for the first time. It was a lesson in grunge at its prime, delivered with swagger and Chris Cornell's perfectly unhinged wail, still as piercing and musical as ever. See amazing live photos from SXSW 2014 The riffs unfolded at the ACL Live at Moody Theatre, whe...  | More »

  • Gaga Stages Art-Puke Spectacle at SXSW

     |  Gavin Edwards

Ever since she was a young provocateur hatched from an egg, Lady Gaga has known how to make an entrance. Last night, for her showcase at SXSW, she was carried onto the stage trussed to a horizontal pole in black underwear, looking like she was a pig roasting on a spit. She then proceeded to sing Artpop opener "Aura," gyrating and spinning all the while. See our best live photos from SXSW 2014 The setting was Stubb's BBQ in Austin, Texas, a courtyard holding about 2,000 people, most of ...  | More »
