Video: Madonna Debuts 'Truth or Dare' TV Ad; ABC Bans It

POSTED:

There's something very 1991 about all this: Madonna cuts a racy black-and-white clip of herself in lingerie, a crucifix and a mask, moans about being bad, and a major television network freaks out. Though it may harken back to her Nineties bedroom-noir era, the offending clip is the very contemporary, very self-referential "Truth or Dare" perfume ad, which debuted just before the weekend. The skittish network in question is ABC (owned by Disney), who have decreed the 30-second promo too racy to broadcast by day. The ads were intended to run during the less-than-PG shows “GCB” and "Scandal."

The New York Post reports that the station made a laundry list of edits they want the clip to undergo before they can air it, much the way YouTube forced the pop queen to censor "Girl Gone Wild."  A source told the paper, "They say they want her bra digitally made bigger, and to extend higher to cover more of her chest, and her corset longer to cover more of her bottom." They'd also like Madonna to cut back on the writhing. Even with these changes, expect to see it only after 9 p.m. Unless, of course, you happen to be watching "The View" – for unknown reasons (that are nonetheless fun to imagine), the 11 a.m. female-hosted talk show is fair game for "Truth or Dare."
