Rising rapper Azealia Banks, already something of a muse to the fashion community, has indicated via Twitter that she may be playing the iconic Costume Institute Gala (also known as the Met Ball) next week. "I can't wait for the MET ball! I'm going as Alexander Wang's date," she tweeted on Friday. "He custom made my outfit and shoes ! !!!! It's soooo hot!" [SIC] That tweet has since been deleted, leading the New York Post to speculate that something fishy is afoot, especially considering another now-deleted tweet: "I've Been invited to Perform for PRADA next week in NYC! Gonna b so lush !! Let’s see what new songs I debut there! #metball2012"

According to the paper, their sources claim that Nicki Minaj was, in fact, organizers' first preference for the Gala's star performer. However, she never signed a contract and Banks was booked as a fill-in. Vogue, who plays a major role in masterminding the event, had no comment.

Banks has enjoyed attention from the fashion community since her breakthrough hit "212" became a major online sensation last autumn. She's already working with Nicola Formichetti (Lady Gaga's creative right hand and Thierry Mugler's director) and has played a Karl Lagerfeld dinner and Kanye West's and Topshop's Fashion Week soirées. Miss Minaj surely is keeping tabs.
