Prada's New Video Ad Recalls Lana Del Rey

POSTED:

Way back in September, when Lana Del Rey was still just a bright-eyed blog sensation, we drew some major connections between the way she and Prada's Spring 2012 collection both appropriated the ideals of "live fast, die young" Americana to give vintage themes a warped new spin. In her videos for "Video Games" and "Blue Jeans," Del Rey juxtaposes lo-fi footage of herself in dramatic vignettes with manic 1950s footage: "It's that frightening sensation of being out of control that really sticks in my mind," she has said. Prada's recent cinematic romp through hot-rod culture provides a similar excitement, with girls immaculately turned out in cat-eye and lipstick prints and bandeau tops inviting speed, danger and messy endings.

A Stephen Meisel-helmed video for Prada Spring 2012 hits the web this week, and those who enjoy the undertones of Del Rey's aesthetic should get a kick out of it.  It also features an excellent soundtrack, with a medley of tunes from Duck and Cover, Tobacco, Sleigh Bells and Ariel Pink.
