Madonna's corsets. Kurt's flannel. Gwen Stefani's bindi. Ginger Spice's Union Jack dress (back in the news!). Nineties music culture was rife with colorful style memories – some deliberate, many the product of a complex time and its attitudes. As nostalgia for the decade reaches an apex, traces of its influence reverberate through current pop culture, with "rave" a vital term again and MTV's House of Style returning to the airwaves. (Whether you associate that channel's video programming with TRL or 120 Minutes or Yo! MTV Raps, you probably agree that the magic is lost and that they don't make videos the way they used to, a relative gripe as always.) In any case, the Nineties provided a hell of a ride through musicians' wardrobes and we're going to retrace that journey, one icon at a time. Here are the Nineties musicians who shaped, and sometimes challenged, a culture's view on style.
