What Is The Saddest Song Ever Written?

What do you think your body does when you hear Robbie Williams' "Angels"? Well, if you're English, apparently your vital signs provide a scientifically recognized collection of readings that mean you're feeling sad. But that sadness you're feeling isn't even the most intense version. According to British scientists (in collaboration with Nokia) "Angels" is only the second saddest song ever, missing the the Verve's "The Drugs Don't Work" by several thousand tears (see the full list below). We allow for the fact that these scientists could suck. They might not have played Bob Dylan's "If You See Her, Say Hello" or The Smith's "I Know It's Over" (to name a few) for their test subjects. Still, this wrong needs righting -- Radiohead's "Fake Plastic Trees" is not the tenth saddest song ever, is it? What track truly deserves the Number One spot?

1. The Verve - The Drugs Don't Work
2. Robbie Williams - Angels
3. Elton John - Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word
4. Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You
5. Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U
6. Will Young - Leave Right Now
7. Elvis Presley - Are You Lonesome Tonight
8. Christina Aguilera - Beautiful
9. James Blunt - Goodbye My Lover
10. Radiohead - Fake Plastic Trees
