Any band worth its letters on the marquee requires an opening act, a band to fill the space between evening and nighttime and to make plain why that big band playing last is that big band playing last. In the old days, the bigger artists gave little attention to their supporting groups, letting local promoters or anyone but them determine who would be warming up – most of the time.
