Jeff the Brotherhood, 'We Are the Champions'

Jeff the Brotherhood, 'We Are the Champions'

These brothers, neither named Jeff, take the punk-blues duo to a new low: Frontman Jake Orrall plays guitar with only three bottom strings. When he and drummer Jamin cut loose in the fuzz bullets "Cool Out" and "Ripper," Jake sounds like Johnny Ramone power-strumming a cello. The Orralls' last effort was rightly called Heavy Days; their songs are often just a couple of chords and high speed. But the brothers have acid on the brain, stirring harmonized distortion and sitar buzz into the boogie. And they back up the balls of this album title: The Blue Cheer-with-Neu! surge of "Mellow Out" is fast bliss.
