Hamlet, Lars Van Trier, Lars Ulrich: Denmark has produced its share of overly-intense dudes. Now you can add these post-punk teens to the list. On their debut album Iceage replicate the tormented post-punk of very-early Joy Division, Wire and New York no-wave with evangelical fervor ­ it's like the ghost of Ian Curtis appeared to them in a holy vision (maybe after a night raiding their parents' liquor cabinet). Wicked guitar shards poke out of the bruising, twisting rumble as singer Elias Rønnenfelt fires off modernist doom chants like "Collapse! Collapse! Collapse!" and "I am white ruin!" His cold, imperious Nordic voice is more Ian Curtis than Curtis himself; it'd be kind of funny if it weren't so creepy.

“1999”

“I don’t consider myself a great poet,” Prince told Rolling Stone. “I just know I’m here to say what’s on my mind.” In the case of the apocalyptic party anthem “1999,” he was worried about then-president Ronald Reagan’s foreign policies. The song’s melody is based on a riff borrowed from the Mamas and Papas’ “Monday, Monday,” and Prince originally envisioned the first verse with three-part harmony but later split the vocals between himself and members of the Revolution. Because Warner Bros., with whom Prince was locked in a contractual battle, owned the original’s masters, Prince rerecorded the song and appropriately released that version in 1999.
