The Conjuring is coming to a theater near you this weekend, and Peter Travers has plenty of good things to say. While previews suggest the movie is just another scary movie, Travers insists that this terrifying (but gore-free!) film actually works.
Joined by the creepy demon doll that opens the flick, Travers explains that the picture centers around a clairvoyant and a demonologist (played by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, respectively) who are hired by a family (Lili Taylor and Ron Livingston) to investigate paranormal activity in their Rhode Island home.
It sounds like something we've seen a million times before, but Travers lauds the work of director James Wan (Saw), who paces the film excellently: "You don't know when the surprise is going to come, and the surprise becomes R-rated," he says. "This isn't one of those PG-13 fake-out haunted house movies. This really gets you."
Any and all spoilers stop here, but Travers adds you've got a good ghost story to see, promising, "You'll scream your bloody head off."
