'Game of Thrones' Author Talks 'Red Wedding' on 'Conan'

George R.R. Martin discusses penchant for killing key characters

Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin stopped by Conan last night to talk about the show and its most recent episode, which, as Conan O'Brien pointed out, blew viewers' minds.

'Game of Thrones' Sparks Intense Reactions

O'Brien asked Martin about his penchant for killing off beloved characters, prompting the author to say, "I like unexpected things, and I always like the suspense to be real. . . . I want my readers and I want my viewers to be afraid when my characters are in danger. I want them to be afraid to turn the next page because the character may not survive it." Martin also talked about meeting a few Thrones actors at the recent third season premiere party, and the moment during their conversation when he realized their characters were all doomed, and only one of the actors had any idea. "But you know, they would know it if they'd read the books," the author cracked.

Martin also talked about how he keeps all his stories and characters straight – and the mega-fans in Sweden who help – as well as the progress he's made on the next Game of Thrones book. You can also check out a clip of Martin watching fan reactions to last week's game changing "Red Wedding."
