The Last Shot
Matthew Broderick, Alec Baldwin, Toni Collette, Calista Flockhart, Tony Shalhoub
Directed by Jeff Nathanson
Let's have a moment of silence for the solid comedy that could have been carved out of this true story of a rookie filmmaker who gets his first film greenlighted only to find he's being used for a mob sting orchestrated by the FBI. Matthew Broderick plays the stooge, Alec Baldwin is the fed, and they're joined by a cast of pros, including Tony Shalhoub, Calista Flockhart and Buck Henry. Sadly, only Toni Collette, as a movie diva, and Joan Cusack, as a potty-mouth agent, get any laughs. Screenwriter Jeff Nathanson (Catch Me If You Can, Rush Hour), in his directing debut, can't find a rhythm, and so a concept that should fly -- Broderick's character must shoot an Arizona-based script in Providence, Rhode Island -- never achieves liftoff.
