Paramount has released the first trailer for next summer's heavyweight blockbuster Star Trek Beyond, the first rebooted Trek movie directed by someone other than J.J. Abrams. (He retains a producer credit despite having defected to another galaxy far, far away). Filling his seat in the director's chair was Justin Lin, whose experience behind the camera on Fast Five and Furious 6 earned him a shot at another franchise blockbuster.
Few details are known about the upcoming film, but what the trailer lacks in info, however, it more than makes up for in attitude. Scotty (Simon Pegg) kicks things off by blasting the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage" through the speakers of the USS Enterprise. From there, the familiar crew of space explorers is stranded on a jungle planet populated by a female alien with ass-kicking karate skills (Kingsman scene-stealer Sofia Boutella). "How are we gonna get out of this one?" Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) muses to himself a few moments before we see him launching into the sky on a motorcycle.
After ripping a few explosions through the series' iconic spaceship and introducing a scaly villain (Idris Elba, unrecognizable beneath his alien makeup) — who threatens that this "is where the frontier pushes back" — the trailer ends by hinting at a most unlikely alliance.
Star Trek Beyond also stars Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urbin, and John Cho, and Star Trek will blast into theaters on July 22nd, 2016.
