CBS has renewed the science fiction mini-series Under the Dome for a second season next summer, the show posted on Twitter. Author and executive producer Stephen King, who wrote the novel that serves as the show's source material, will pen the first episode of the second season.
Under the Dome tells the story of the town of Chester's Mill, Maine, and its sudden separation from the outside world by way of a mysterious, invisible barrier. The mini-series premiered late last month and looked to go toe-to-toe with HBO, AMC and FX with its original 13 episode run this summer.
"Finally, the networks are starting to realize they have to step it up if they want to compete with the prestigious cable dramas," Rolling Stone's Rob Sheffield wrote last month. "Under the Dome has both grand narrative scope and the small-bore detail that networks haven't succeeded with since Lost ended."
