Zach Galifianakis is attached to star as Ignatius J. Reilly in an upcoming film adaptation of A Confederacy of Dunces, Vulture reports. James Bobin, co-creator of Flight of the Conchords and director of The Muppets, and producer Scott Rudin are reportedly in talks with Paramount Pictures over bringing John Kennedy Toole's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel to the big screen. Cedar Rapids screenwriter Phil Johnston will pen the script.
The film version of Dunces has failed to launch for almost 30 years. Harold Ramis originally planned to adapt the novel to film in 1982 before his intended star, John Belushi, passed away. The project has been bogged in difficulty since, with intended stars John Candy and Chris Farley passing away as well. Will Ferrell was set to develop and star in a Dunces film five years ago, before that attempt also got the ax.
