Deerhunter's Bradford Cox has joined the cast of The Dallas Buyers Club, an upcoming drama starring Matthew McConaughey about a man with AIDS who sought alternative medical treatment. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cox will portray the lover of fellow rocker Jared Leto's character, a cross-dresser who is dying of AIDS.
The Dallas Buyers Club is based on Ron Woodruff, a Texas electrician who contracted HIV through drug use in the Eighties. When doctors told him he had six months to live, Woodruff began smuggling alternative drugs into the U.S. for himself and other AIDS patients. While the medicine extended Woodruff's life, it also pitted him against the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which wanted to keep such medicine out of the country.
Directed by Jean-Marc Vallee, the film is currently shooting in New Orleans and will also feature Jennifer Garner, Griffin Dunne and Denis O'Hare.
