Experimental filmmaker Jennifer Elster prefers to avoid specifics when she talks about her mysterious new star-studded film series, The Being Experience. "I'm completely connected to the core of my existence and the truth," she says. "It's what I care about." Which means . . . what, exactly? Viewers can search for hints in the latest installment of the series, featuring Dave Matthews and actor Terrence Howard.
The 18-minute clip shows the two stars wandering in the woods, exploring their own thoughts. Matthews struggles with what seems to be an insatiable appetite, while Howard is awestruck by the predatory nature of a tree vine. Effects-laden vocalizations from Yoko Ono provide an eerie soundtrack to the otherwise bare-bones production.
Future installments of The Being Experience will include appearances from Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, Moby, Rufus Wainwright, Alan Cumming and Famke Janssen. Asked what inspired the project, Elster is typically vague. "One question that I had in my mind," she says, "which I answered in the woods." And what question would that be? She won't say.
