'Birdman,' 'Fargo' and 'True Detective' Dominate Golden Globe Nominations

'The Imitation Game,' 'Boyhood' and 'House of Cards' also scored several nods for the 72nd annual awards show

Birdman soared to the top of the Golden Globe nominees, picking up seven nods, including Best Motion Picture — Comedy or Musical, while Boyhood, The Imitation Game and Big Eyes followed with five each. In the television categories, Fargo led the pack with five, while True Detective and House of Cards followed with four each.

Boyhood will compete in the Best Motion Picture — Drama category, against Selma, Foxcatcher, The Imitation Game and The Theory of Everything. Meanwhile, Birdman will go toe-to-toe in the Motion Picture — Comedy or Musical category with The Grand Budapest Hotel, Into the Woods, Pride and St. Vincent.

Along with its Best Picture — Comedy or Musical nomination, Michael Keaton, Emma Stone and Edward Norton were all nominated for their performances in Birdman, as was director Alejandro González Iñárritu. Boyhood mastermind Richard Linklater picked up nominations for writing and directing his 12-year opus, as did the film's stars Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette.

Selma star David Oyelowo and director Ava DuVernay were also recognized, as was Steve Carell for his performance in Foxcatcher. Both Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley were nominated for their performances in The Imitation Game, as were Christoph Waltz and Amy Adams for Big Eyes. And proving once again why he's the greatest, Bill Murray notched two acting nominations, one in film for his starring performance in St. Vincent, the other for his supporting role in HBO's mini-series, Olive Kitteridge

Lana Del Rey's title-track for Big Eyes notched her a Best Original Song nomination, for which she'll compete against John Legend and Common's "Glory" (Selma), Patti Smith and Lenny Kaye's "Mercy Is" (Noah), Lorde's "Yellow Flicker Beat" (Mockingjay) and Sia, Greg Kurstin and Will Gluck's "Opportunity" (Annie).

As for the television awards, Fargo and True Detective will face off in most of the Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television categories, including Best Mini-Series or TV Movie, as well as the Best Performance by an Actor, in which True Detective's Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, and Fargo's Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thornton were all nominated (Mark Ruffalo filled out the category for his turn in The Normal Heart; he was also nominated for his performance in Foxcatcher).

In the Best Television Series — Drama category, the nominees were The Affair, Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, The Good Wife and House of Cards, while the Comedy category will feature Girls, Jane the Virgin, Orange Is the New Black, Silicon Valley and Transparent.
