News yesterday that Ben Affleck will play Batman in the upcoming Man of Steel prompted an outpouring of reactions online, from occasional congratulations to plenty of Good Will Hunting and Gigi jokes.
Affleck will star opposite Henry Cavill as Superman in the sequel, which Zack Synder will direct for a 2015 release. Cavill also played Superman in this summer's Man of Steel.
"We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics' most enduringly popular super heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some. His outstanding career is a testament to his talent and we know he and Zack will bring new dimension to the duality of this character," Greg Silverman, president of creative development at Warner Bros Pictures, said, according to Reuters.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Snyder has said that Affleck's Batman "bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain[s] the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne."
