23. 'Dennis Miller: Black and White' (1990)

After he made his name as the snarky, hair-flipping newscaster on SNL's "Weekend Update" — and before he became a polarizing post-9/11 pundit — Dennis Miller had one of the sharpest stand-up acts on the block. You can blame this iconic special, shot in black and white for extra pretense, for inspiring a generation of comics after him to tag their jokes with pointless literary or historical references (Miller namedrops Koyaanisqatsi, Boo Radley, and Queequeg with ease), but his act truly holds up thanks to a surgical syntactic precision to which current satirists like Bill Maher and John Oliver aspire.
