22. 'Hobo With a Shotgun' (2011)

Subgenres: Shockploitation, Hoboploitation, Hauerploitation
Rutger Hauer, in the role he was born to play after he played Roy Batty, is a homeless itinerant with a dream who stumbles into the nightmare world of "Scum Town." What follows is like Yojimbo meets Dead Alive, a sick saga (over)stuffed with hooker murders, bum fights, decapitation by truck-pulled barbwire noose, a school bus full of kids set on fire and a reluctant hero who's finally pushed too far. The film grew out of the prize-winning fake trailer in a 2007 promotional contest for Grindhouse, but whereas that movie and spinoffs like Machete wink self-consciously at exploitation cinema's grimy low-budget luridness, Hobo With a Shotgun revels in it with a straight face – or rather, with Hauer’s vein-bulging, wide-eyed grimace.
