18. 'Harry Brown' (2009)

As he's grown older, Michael Caine has zeroed in on grandfatherly mentor roles; in this gritty vigilante thriller, however, the veteran recalls the steely badasses of his Get Carter days with a vengeance. A retired Royal Marine, Harry lives in a London neighborhood beset by drugs and gang warfare; when his best bloke is murdered by local thugs, our elderly antihero meticulously hunts down the no-goodniks responsible. It's a melancholy portrait of mortality and grief  — one hidden, however, beneath a grimy revenge story, complete with other odious cretins, righteous fury and gory kills. In Christopher Nolan's Batman films, the two-time Oscar-winner played the kindly butler, Alfred. This time out, he got to be the Dark Knight. TG
