The Final “I’m From Rolling Stone” Writing Contest: National Affairs
The kids’ very last assignment was for the National Affairs section of the magazine: they were asked to investigate one of six U.S. corporations with the worst pollution track record in the nation and write an expose of the company, citing the negative impact that the businesses have on the environment and the communities in which they operate.
Your assignment: Research the steps a local business has taken to go green. It is advisable that you conduct an interview with one of the business’s managerial employees, as well as a member of the community who may have been positively affected by the shift. Write a 300-word investigative item using your reporting. Submit your entry here.
You’ve got until Friday at noon EST! This is your last chance to make your parents/children/lovers/dog proud and be eligible to win a First Act guitar and a Rhapsody Sansa MP3 player. TWO winners will be chosen this week.
Need inspiration? See how the MTV kids did with their own reports:
- The Dark Side of Kentucky: Krishtine de Leon Reports From the Tyson Chicken Fields
- The Dark Side of the Rio Grande: Tika Milan Reports on Asarco’s Texas Refinery
- The Dark Side of Alaska: Colin Stutz Reports From the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill
- The Dark Side of Texas: Pete Maiden Reports on Corpus Christi’s Koch Industries

I’ve been in cryo-freeze. When did
gunshot wounds, murder and no underwear get numbered among the dues you have to pay to be a rock
star? Could Bowie’s Rock And Roll
Suicide be that far off?

Why are all the executive editors and main players MEN at Rolling Stone? Why are they all WHITE MEN? Where is the diversity in the higher ups?
Whhhaaattever.
journalism has hit rock bottom | 3/22/2007, 3:38 am EST
wow. this show has really made an impact on my life. it taught me that you can write a bullshit story about nothing and write for a magazine that has no social impact whatsoever. as the music industry declines, so does music journalism; two-fold. does anyone even care. btw its funny that they picked a handful or rich kids who have nothing to lose to compete in this “contest”. its ok…daddy will take care of eveything.

Why not write about Tom Cruise and his anti-anti-depressents Cruise-ade? Him and his “crappy” applied religious philosophy that accepts all religions until OT III where we all know about Xenu… Thats more fun than a barrel of Jack&Coke….

You’re asking people to hassle local businesses for interviews for a story that won’t even appear in print? Shameless.
Ditto to more contests! | 3/20/2007, 10:52 am EST
I bet it’s too time consuming for them but I loved the weeks I’ve participated… it gave me something to look forward to.

What if we choose to write about an institution (like a college/university) instead of a corporation. Would that still be ok?

I know this is the last contest. But can we have more of these writing contests? they were fun! maybe a monthly writing contest or a bi-montly one?
