The Rock & Roll Dozen: Our Finalists for Assignment #8

It’s hard to distinguish between what you think might be trendy — news flash: that whole Eighties comeback thing? It happened like four years ago, so please stop wearing leggings — and an outright pop-culture phenomenon. These finalists walked a fine line, but some of their submissions hipped us to stuff even we hadn’t heard or thought of. Then again, we haven’t been getting out much, what with all those Law and Order marathons on TV.

Read and learn from our ten best op-ed/trend forecast writing finalists. We’ll name one of them a winner on Wednesday. (Spoils include a First Act guitar and a Rhapsody Sansa MP3 player). And you only have one more chance to enter our writing competition. A new assignment will be announced Monday.

Some of these do adhere to that, some don’t. Maybe it’s because of the subject matter, it was hard to pinpoint a trend I bet and these were some of the most unique ideas.

I ttoally agree. I actually wrote a 100 percent straight news story and was a little dissapointed to see some of these finalists without even any quotes! And what happened to the whole “three sources” thing??

News stories? | 3/11/2007, 1:39 pm EST

I read through these and they are all pretty well-written, but didn’t the assignment say to write a “news” story? Several of these are written in an editorial style, and although they are again great, that wasn’t the point of the assignment, right?

Maybe I misunderstood, but I think mine would have turned out better had I not tried to take a more news-style approach to it. Clearly ones written in an editorial style will have more flava.
