Cage the Elephant

by Ryan Hall
Age: 25

My Morning Jacket isn’t the only band looking to slap a kick-ass rock n’ roll injunction on the use of Kentucky’s state nickname. Enter Louisville based quintet Cage the Elephant, a collection of young brothers and childhood pals who lately have been delivering their brand of “frantic, maximum volume-laden” groove rock to packed out clubs across the South on a tear that could rival Sherman’s legendary civil war march. In the process, they’ve whipped strange crowds into frenzies opening for rock heavyweights Army of Anyone, stolen fans (and shows) from critical darlings Be Your Own Pet, and rocked out on satellite radio. And that’s just the past few months. Next up for the band? A maiden voyage to Canadian Music Week and a prime Thursday night slot at South by Southwest - two gigs that will almost certainly have the industry suits salivating and convincing the boys of their impending rock superstardom.

But the baby-faced, Kentucky cutups don’t get caught up in their own hype. They are too focused on melting faces with their potent mixture of drummer Jared Champion’s syncopated funk-bomb beats, bassist Daniel Tichenor’s rock-solid, chugging bass lines, and the thwack and vroom, razor and twang twin axe attack of guitarists Lincoln Parish and Brad Shultz. And then of course there’s Brad’s younger brother and lead singer, Matt, who spits his hyper-speed, rant and wail tales of fast women, late nights, and fractured identity through a fury of stage diving, light tower climbing, front man freakouts. Imagine a coked-up Arctic Monkey preaching over GN’R sleaze meets early Chili Peppers punkfunk, and you’re getting close.

Indie cred, an obsessive fan base of “elephants”, industry heat - this perfect storm that is brewing will soon explode, and believe me, it’s gonna be a joy to watch (and listen to).

The Filthy Souls:

Dave Green: Guitar, Vocals
Anthony Lavin: Guitar, Backing vocals
Marc Hogan: Drums
Bass: Barry Robinson

Dave Green has been around - and it shows. At only 22, this singer/songwriter from the North-West of England has not only a creative maturity well beyond his years, but strength of voice that transcends both era and classification.

At ages 14, Dave, Anthony and Marc cut a CD under the name ‘The People’ and subsequently signed on with Canadian music manager Daniel Brookes. By 17, Dave was invited to sign with another of ‘Brookes’ bands - ‘Roller’, in which he undertook two tours of the United States and Canada opening for 54-40 and Danny Michel. In this time, both Anthony and Marc went their separate directions to focus on their own styles of music and to further progress their talent.

In 2004 Dave undertook 6 months of writing and recording in Canada with such industry notables as Rich Beddoe (Finger Eleven), Vincent Sciara and Ken Corke (Skye Sweetnam). Since having successfully opened support shows with the likes of ‘The Damned’, ‘We Start Fires’, ‘The Futureheads’ and ‘Ali Love’, Dave has been in the studio with producer John Kettle (Marble Index, Moco), where he focused on developing a new sound and worked on and completed his full-length C.D.

In October, 2007, Dave invited back the talents of Hogan and Lavin, and successfully auditioned Barry Robinson as bassist to complete the line-up of The Filthy Souls.

In Vancouver Dave recently shot two videos for the singles ‘Shootin Stars’ and ‘The Boys Will Be Out for a Fight’. The Filthy Souls music has already been heard at numerous festivals, including recent success of ‘In The City’, as well as on the Fox Television series ‘Vanished’ and Manchester’s ‘Channel M’.

More recently, the band have seen interest expressed from Crown Music Management (Sugar Babes, Keane, Orson, Prodigy) and have had multiple meetings with their management team who love the band’s sound and dedication to their love of music.

The band are planning a trip to Los Angeles in July 2008 to introduce their music to the US market. However, the trips main focal aim is to create interest from US record labels. This biography is to introduce you to the band and to see if you could assist in any way………

Will | 9/28/2007, 3:06 am EST

You read too much Rolling Stone, and this sounds like it was copped from the band’s website. This band is a bunch of hacks with cliches - anyone can thrash and pound while the singer moans about “empty streets” and “broken dreams”.

Not to mention, your comparitives to other awesome bands in closing was a great idea–it makes me actually want to listen to them.

Monica...Court's Sis | 3/6/2007, 12:37 pm EST

Chris Kennedy | 3/6/2007, 9:08 am EST

I went to school with this writer. The boy has talent. Now only if he had the looks to go with it.

Keep up the writing Ryan, it’s got some mad flow (and this is coming from someone with an actual degree in Journalism, not like these other crapsacks who think because they use some ‘mad verbage’ they can comment on your slick skills.)

Good luck boss. You’ve got it wrapped up.

Drew | 3/5/2007, 10:49 pm EST

These guys have “IT”, you can hear it in the music and feel it at their shows. Solid write-up Ryan Hall.

holly | 3/5/2007, 10:41 pm EST

I went to school with half the band ,who are from Bowling Green, and pretty much grew up with them. Some of them are like family to me, and are childhood friends to my husband. they have really came along way and have work hard to get were they are now. I wish the best for them. they have a long road ahead of them.

CSmith | 3/5/2007, 10:34 pm EST

Dope article for sure. Cage is tight but you should have done Ratatat or Mew, those bands are the HEAT right now!

Dirty D | 3/5/2007, 10:20 pm EST

They are the shit, those boys are going places…

Neath | 3/5/2007, 9:30 pm EST

Grew up with these boys, use to drive’em to school! Use to get drunk with’em, hell still do that! I know their gonna hit it big and soon, to bad I’m in Iraq and don’t get to watch. Ryan, one helluva an article I thought I was reading RS! this guy daneil, who posted “sloppy drummer” needs work, band has potential!! I’ll break his freakin’ legs when I get home! These guys are original and if they need work go watch them again, because they rock harder every time I see them play.

Jaime720 | 3/5/2007, 9:10 pm EST

AMAZING BAND!!!! Impressive live show!!

MC Dana | 3/5/2007, 7:16 pm EST

Good stuff. I just went to their website and purchased the cd upon reading your review. Hope to see more of your stuff.

Ya Boy Pat | 3/5/2007, 3:00 pm EST

That’s some good shit Kid! Flows like hell. That Dude person is just jealous, don’t sweat it. Hit me up later…

Ryan Hall | 3/5/2007, 12:01 am EST

Hey y’all, I wrote this late at night and had a couple of brain farts. I know the boys are from Bowling Green, and I forgot to put ” ” marks around one quote fragment. Chill out. Effective and creative incorporation of quotes from the subject(s) of the piece is part of good journalism.

L Train | 3/4/2007, 11:06 pm EST

pretty impressive!!

The Dude | 3/4/2007, 3:58 pm EST

Cage the Elephant is a bad ass band that is from BOWLING GREEN! It appears to me that the writer states things that are disclosed on your bio for SXSW. I thik a great writer should use his own words and not try and borrow other peoples creative phrases.

Erica | 3/4/2007, 2:44 pm EST

You’ve got the RS adjectives-packed-beyond-capac ity style in your back pocket.

Good shit.

daneil | 3/4/2007, 9:58 am EST

seen them 2x in nashville, tn and they need work. lots of potential though, but really sloppy drummer.

Kaitlan | 3/4/2007, 4:28 am EST

So talented… Are you sure you are not an established journalist?

Anonymous | 3/4/2007, 2:54 am EST

Ramon in TX | 3/3/2007, 10:52 pm EST
