Juke Kartelby Paula Hansen
Age: 37Tommy Lee’s Blunder, Juke Kartel’s Boon
Tommy Lee screwed the pooch last summer, passing up Toby Rand to front his reality-TV-spawned band, Rock Star Supernova. Still on the bill for the RSS world tour, but stealing the show every night with his own hard-rocking Aussie band, Juke Kartel, Toby says, “Coming in 3rd is the best thing that ever happened.”
Since the mid-September TV finale, Juke Kartel has headlined an 18-city club tour, opened 28 RSS shows, and recorded their debut album for an April release. When it slams the charts, uninformed critics will, no doubt, dub them “overnight sensations,” but these are no fresh-from-the-garage amateurs. They’ve been on top downunder for years, opening for Nickelback, The Used, and Killswitch Engage, to name a few.
Impatient fans needing their hard-rock Juke fix prompted a 4-track teaser CD to be sold at their gigs, including the indelible “Throw it Away,” performed on the TV show, a phenomenal acoustic version of the same, the sensuous “December,” and “Save Me,” which has a distinctly metal edge.
Even at 10 bucks a pop, hundreds fly off the merch tables each night. No surprise. Juke’s Myspace has over 730,000 streaming audio plays. Fellow openers, The Panic Channel with Dave Navarro, and Rock Star Supernova themselves have fewer than 600K plays each.
Forget the TV show - as if you haven’t already - Toby and Juke Kartel are the hands-down victors on stage, tagged “best performance of the night” by reviewers and fans alike. Pretty damned impressive for just 20 minutes and no stage set - just five sinfully-talented musicians dripping with adrenaline and sweat, playing their hearts out, and flat-out killing it. Fuck the seizure-inducing strobes and over-the-top theatrics. No costumes or gimmicks here. It’s all T-shirts and Converse and unadulterated rock.
Halle-fucking-lujah! Rock-n-Roll Lives!

Your so cute. Juke
are cool guys, the music is rockin, but as I’ve told the guys - it’s my opinion that they don’t need all the sugar coating and overproduction on the great tunes. I’ve seen them six times, small clubs and large arena’s. They’re awesome in person, I like the original Itunes and Tarko cuts. The EP is good, but to me, it isn’t as raw and pure as it was before. I’m sure some won’t agree with me. But you’ll never grow if you don’t get feedback, both positive and negative.
Besides…:) Seems like some think I’ve already been here before. *laughing*
Susan :) | 3/28/2007, 1:56 pm EST
fabulous article Paula! Thanks for shining the spotlight on a kick @$$ band that is restoring our faith in Rock N Roll everytime they take stage!!
Anonymous | 3/27/2007, 11:31 pm EST
I agree with the comment below. It takes the spotlight off the band. And that’s WHO the article is about after all. Isn’t it?
Anonymous | 3/27/2007, 5:31 pm EST
I think the kid has every right to say whatever he wants. I believe it’s called FREEDOM OF SPEECH.
And looks like more than one person in here has trouble reading. Because the kid never slammed the band once. And for those reacting so vehemently over the “groupie” comment, you fuel the fire by going on & on about how you’re NOT ONE. “The lady doth protest too much, methinks” springs to mind. You’d have been better off ignoring it completely.
Anonymous | 3/26/2007, 2:03 pm EST
Funny… I thought bands WERE about music.
Muzaq | 3/22/2007, 10:34 pm EST
I dont care what any of you have to say, EVERY band has a groupie. So what? And Juke Kartel is an AWESOME band and Im so thrilled that they took the time to actually do an interview with me. They are so connected with their fans and what they do. So critize their music, its not ALL about that, its about THEM as a BAND and what they do for their fans/or anyone for that matter. El Fin.
Nick | 3/19/2007, 5:47 pm EST
Oh for heavens sake wake up. Juke Kartel are a bunch of heroes with one half good song and a bunch of others that wouldnt get on a Fuel B sides album.
The reason these guys dont have a deal after so much exposure and touring is because their songs are average and not cutting any new ground, its all just re issued late 90’s rock and bands like Nickelback have already got it covered.
They toured around Melbourne for years and didnt get a deal because from the day they started playing covers they all thought they were rock stars before they had written anything.
I have seen them play to 100, and to 5 and apart from a bunch of over excited american kids these guys are not good enough, and will fade, the english music press new it, the australian scene always new it.
Granted, marketing goes a long way and you cant buy this kind of exposure but the fact is, juke Kartel are an average rock band with a good looking charismatic singer with an OK voice but they dont have the material.
You need 4 to 5 chart winners, look at jet, look at Maroon 5. These guys dont have one, which is why they keep getting get rejected by labels, for the same reason Marty from series one did.
Wake up and smell the coffee guys, really nice guys, but they are not start quality song writers.
And no I am not a disgruntled muso, I work for a record label and have seen their demo 3 to 4 times.
Joke Kartel, RIP.

Wow Seth– three posts & you’re stirring up some comments. What’d you do, insult a band’s groupies or something?!
But seriously people, Seth has a legitimate point. When writing about a band, regardless if you’re a fan or not, you don’t want to sound like a twelve-year old’s diary entry. You need to sound professional. You can state if they’re good or not, but going over the top is going to diminish the respect your writing is given…and the respect you’re given.
Keli | 3/9/2007, 7:24 pm EST
Yea okay. but that isn’t how I read this anyway. The way I read it is seth says he’d student. And when you are an student you try. Anywey, it seems like people are talking about something else here anyway. Like about someone and thats stupid because I cant tell who says what. Not that matters but it sound to me like seth said he liked the band.
joyce | 3/8/2007, 9:20 pm EST
Keli, it matters because there are some very negative connotations that go along with the word groupie and Seth has no right calling a group of hard working fans groupies when he knows absolutely nothing about them.
Secondly, his constructive critism is way off base because he obviously did not understand the assignment. Maybe he should focus more on his own writing (we can see below he has a lot of work to do) instead of critisizing others.
Keli | 3/8/2007, 8:44 pm EST
I think everyone here is attaking a comment that doesn’t do anything to insult anyone. Everyone’s entitled to their opinion, you know. People are getting way to personal here. Who cares if your a groupy or a fan or a write or a student. I think all this is stoopid. What’s with all the name calling and stuff. Stupid stupid stupid.
Amy | 3/7/2007, 4:54 pm EST
Paula - Thank you so much for writing this article and for supplying a link so that we could read it. You may not have won but you are a winner in my eyes.
Seth J - What a Rogue you are! Did you Fallon this page out of the blue? Or as a Disgruntled Fan did you find the link on a fan site and then fly over here to make some negative comments.
Anonymous | 3/7/2007, 4:10 pm EST
Okay, Janie!
anonymous | 3/7/2007, 2:59 am EST
Seth J - As a journalism student and a fan of writing, you should learn to use the English language correctly. I hope my suggestions will help you with future writing assignments.
Here are just a few corrections based on your first post:
- Write “you’re a fan” not “your a fan”.
- Write “reviewers said” not “reviewer’s said”
- Cite sources not resources.
- Use a hyphen. You should write well-deserved, dewy-eyed, co-band, and good-looking.
There is more to be said about run-on sentences, punctuation, and vocabulary. Let’s leave that for another lesson.
Seth J...LA | 3/6/2007, 7:31 pm EST
This is the last I’ll say about this.
I am a fan of music and writing. If you read my original post, there is nothing untoward there about the band or the bands fans, or Paula, for that matter. I read the article and pointed out things I thought would assist in improving. I went to the site posted for said “street team” and the posting’s there. My judgement call is without bias. If you care to take it your own way and twist it, so be it.
My name is Seth Jaminksy and I’m a journalism student outside of L.A.
I am not a critic, I am not critical. I like Supernova, clearly some of you don’t. I like a lot of bands and it’s my opinion that Juke Kartel can do more for themselves than they are.
That’s it, that’s all. You are making more of it than you need to. If you want to keep making more of it, keep on keepin on. I’m not a “disgruntled fan” or otherwise. Hat’s off to all of you and good luck with whatever you do.
Tracie | 3/6/2007, 3:55 pm EST
Paula, thanks for taking the time to give a review of Juke Kartel. They are amazing! I have seen them live a few times…and each time I am blown away. They have so much chemistry, talent and charisma! I took my husband to one of their shows and he walked away a fan also. It is just hard not to love these guys!
2007 will be the year of JUKE KARTEL!
joyce | 3/6/2007, 1:33 pm EST
First let me take out the TRASH…Seth if your objective was to insult a group of intelligent, devoted, music loving, passionate people with your comments, then you have succeeded. I AM NOT a groupie, I DO NOT chase the band, I have NEVER even thought of asking anyone in the band for a phone number, I have NEVER tried to book a room at their hotel, and I have NEVER been backstage. What I have done, is devote time, energy, and money to help a band I think FUCKING ROCKS, achieve their dreams and get the recognition they deserve. In return, I have received hugs and many thanks from each and every band member, but the best part is, along the way, I have formed friendships that will last a lifetime. For you to insult me and my friends really pisses me off!!!!
If your objective was to show your stupidity, then you have succeeded. The assignment was to “write up a researched profile pitching an up-and-coming band or artist”. Do I need to explain to you what “pitching an up-and-coming band or artist” means? The assignment was not to review a show as you seem to think. Maybe you have difficulty with reading. I bet you are feeling REALLY STUPID about now!!! I know I would if I were you. Now, go away, you are bugging me.
PAULA, BIG UPS TO YOU!!!! You wrote an amazing article that I really enjoyed reading. I am so glad other people are getting to see and experience what I have been for months. JUKE KARTEL KICKS ASS, each and every time they hit the stage. Those boys give 110% every night for their fans. They are the best of friends and they are having a fucking blast…Lucky for us, they are letting us join the PARTY!!!! Keep up the good work Paula and best of luck to you in all you do!!!
Jaime | 3/6/2007, 11:21 am EST
This band is amazing and will only get better has time goes on. The reason for all their fans you happen to call “groupies” is for the simple fact that they are so good to their fans. They take the time to talk to each fan, sign autographs, and take pictures until the last fan is standing in line. This band is not only talented but they are very genuine. They are very grateful for everyone that supports them and their music is incredible and for that I will be a fan for life!
raelynn | 3/6/2007, 10:34 am EST
that is an awesome article! juke fucking rocks, i’ve been lucky enough to see them twice in concert, once on their solo tour, and once on the supernova tour. and i got to meet TOBY
amazing! these guys are awesome and down to earth and just kick ass ! can’t wait til the CD comes out!
Carrie-Lynne | 3/6/2007, 12:09 am EST
Hey Paula!!! Thanks for raving about the boys!!!!! The JK storm is about to take the world over like a tidal wave and I can’t wait for it to hit everyone so then they’ll understand the fever I have been shouting about since last summer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rock on JK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Redevs | 3/5/2007, 10:58 pm EST
Fantastic Paula!! With an out look like this on the group, whod be silly enough to look them over.
All the best for the comp. I hope you bring it on home!!
Well done once again!!
Shazza | 3/5/2007, 9:07 pm EST
Paula,
That’s truly an amazing article you’ve written.
I’m an aspiring journalist and can really appreciate a well written piece.
And you’ve written about my favourite band in the world, Juke Kartel!!!! 10 out of 10 mate!
2007 is the year of Juke.
You’ve been warned!
Good luck Paula.
Shaz
chelsii | 3/5/2007, 7:43 pm EST
i lovee you paula =D
juke kartel is pretty much amazingg.
really good article fer sher.
Nick | 3/5/2007, 7:16 pm EST
Seth(yeah right)….Well at least now we know you are nothing more than a disgruntled former fan who is jealous and petty rather than someone truly interested in this band or this article. Thank you for “outing” yourself and shame on you for using Paula or Rolling Stone as a medium for your pettiness.
Let’s move on to the real issue here…this article and this fantastic writer.
Adelle | 3/5/2007, 7:11 pm EST
Paula I love your article! Very emotive and to the point.
You have “writers” reviewing your review! What a compliment!
Nick | 3/5/2007, 6:26 pm EST
Seth(yeah right)….Well at least now we know you are nothing more than a disgruntled former fan who is jealous and petty rather than someone truly interested in this band or this article. Thank you for “outing” yourself and shame on you for using Paula or Rolling Stone as a medium for your petty bullshit.
Let’s move on to the real issue here…this article and this fantastic writer.
Sarah | 3/5/2007, 6:18 pm EST
I’m a groupie?? Wow, that’s news to me. What does that make my husband, who helped me street team at a show? His mother will be so disappointed to discover he’s nothing more than a bandwhore.
Amy L. | 3/5/2007, 6:03 pm EST
Wow, Seth, your a writer?? You sure have alot of knowledge on how a groupie is suppose to act. And a lot of knowledge on which fans that posted here are part of the Street Team. How is that? Maybe you should write about that and cite your references…and maybe you’d win the contest instead and not be intent on bringing a fellow writer down and trashing other people in the process
Lori | 3/5/2007, 5:58 pm EST
Seth - didn’t realize you were trying for such critical acclaim and recognition — not what this contest is about! Put your glasses on and you try reading the assignment. It’s about gut wrenching “thank God for real Rock” part of the assignment that Paula did in fact capture. Drop the issue with “groupies” and read that there are vibrant people out there (regardless of sex or age) that dig the energy and freshness of JK. You missed the boat, quit trashing those of us who got the point to the assignment, not to mention feeling the band. So sad! Taking yourself so seriously as a “writer” — don’t see your name on the finalist list…apparently Levy saw something you perhaps don’t? We’ll see on Wed, won’t we?
Seth J...LA | 3/5/2007, 5:29 pm EST
Oh, I forgot to address the Juke Street Team posting. Yes, groupies, among other things, do attempt to find the band, stay at their hotels, get their phone numbers, try to get backstage, talk about the band all the time, go gaga over this boy or girl and fantasize endlessly regarding that object. Isn’t that what you do and have done? Let’s have another round of “Chase the band”.
Seth J...LA | 3/5/2007, 5:25 pm EST
You see..this proves my point. I am talking from a writers point of view. This submission was for a writing contest. You groupies who are jumping all over me aren’t getting the point.. Did I not say I like the band? Why yes, I did. Now grow up and re-read. Constructive critism makes a writer..and a group, artist, anyone..better in the long run. Welcome to the party, groupies..:)
Lori | 3/5/2007, 5:19 pm EST
Seth, Boobie, 3 words: Get A Clue. Go back to your retirement home. Didn’t see you there at Fargo, so who the hell are you to point out flaws? Critic — it’s obvious you are one. Read the assignment next time before crashing the party. When’s the last time you FELT something?! Paula and Juke –\”/ rock on!
19.95 | 3/5/2007, 4:25 pm EST
Hell yeah Juke Kartel! I’ve had the pleasure of seeing these boys play several times and they always put on a kick ass rock show! It is so refreshing to see a group of musicians having a genuinely good time on stage. I haven’t been excited about a rock band in years, and after seeing these guys play in Baltimore this past December, I knew I was hooked. I want to wish the Juke Kartel boys all the success in the world, especially since the last thing the music industry needs is another whiney emo group crying about how their parents didn’t love them. And can someone please explain to me what is so wrong with Converse and T-shirts? 2007 will be the year of the Juke. Fuck yeah! Wa-Oh-Ah-Oh-Ah-Oh!
Ken | 3/5/2007, 12:13 pm EST
I caught Juke Kartel at Pala Casino. I was there as someone in his 40’s to see Supernova and came away disappointed with Supernova’s performace. I do recall thinking a highlight was Juke Kartel and how refreshing they were. And I remember being politely approached by members of their Street Team and offered free merchandise to commemorate their performance. That doesnt happen every day, and Juke kartel are lucky to have such a loyal fan base and Street Team. It added to my wife and my enjoyment and made us want to meet them later. They had a signing after the show and were the most courteous and nice guys. People dont forget that. Supernova’s performance however, if people forget it, that would be best for them, because we were left with a bad taste in our mouth about it.
anonymous | 3/5/2007, 11:48 am EST
I think Seth is missing the point - maybe sneakers and TShirts and a band that looks like it is having a great time on stage (along with great original music that could not be displayed during their short set with the Supernova Tour) is the wave of the future. After a while, sickly angst-driven rockers gets tiresome. Bring on the new, I’m all for having a good time.
marybeth | 3/5/2007, 9:44 am EST
Seth, I have already posted a review but felt the need to address your comment. Yes, I am a member of the street team but unfortunately I have only been to one concert. There were five street teamers at the Columbus concert that I went to. I was not signed on to officially help them and I wanted to meet the band. I waited in a very long line for an hour and a halfin order to do that. Juke Kartel signed autographs on their EPs and merchandise for almost two hours that night. That was not a fluke! There were that many people who were blown away by their performance at the Schott. I too felt they were easily the best band of the evening even though i enjoyed all four bands. They sold out of their EPs almost every concert on the tour and anywhere that allowed a meet and greet, the guys met every fan who wanted the opportunity and stayed hours to do so. Paula has written a fabulous review-she hit the essence of what Juke Kartel is musically and I look for them to even get bigger during their next tour. 2007 will be their year. There is nothing wrong with tshirts and converse sneakers. The music is what it is about and JK brings it!
Juke Kartel Street Team | 3/5/2007, 8:42 am EST
The Juke Kartel Street Team may be a lot of things, but “groupies” is not one of them. Seth obviously doesn’t know what a street team is or what it does. The JKST is a fan-based promotional machine with members across the globe. Our goal is to spread the word about Juke Kartel and have their music heard by as many people as possible. For more information about who we are and what we do, visit our website at www.jkstreetteam.org. Be sure to check out the forum for reviews and photos from every show on both the recent Supernova tour and the 2006 solo tour. Aren’t groupies girls who sleep with the road crew in hopes of meeting the band? I don’t see the correlation.
Chopper | 3/5/2007, 5:33 am EST
Seeing Toby and the boys play gigs in around St.Kilda, Melbounre Aus, I felt and said at the time, that if these boys don’t make it then there’s something wrong with the system.
A great bunch of guys who have some fantstic songs!
Sounds like the perfect receipt to me!
Seth J...LA | 3/4/2007, 6:31 pm EST
Okay, Juke Kartel is good, no doubt, but this article is a bit rough. Paula, it’s clear your a fan, but when one is a music critic, you have to step back and sample the music - bring it to something the rest of us can relate to.
I too, agree that Juke Kartel is good, however, they don’t have the charisma needed to pull in the big crowds. Supernova’s Lukas is charasmatic, as is S. Issacs from Panic Channel. Toby, while great looking and a good singer, comes off as your big brother on stage. Juke Kartel’s solo tour got negative press and took a backseat to their co band Whitestarr. When you write to review, you must give more details on the music, not just a dewy eyed review of good looking guys with guitars.
I’ve done a bit of casual research as well and found that Juke Kartel have a huge fan base in Australia, it’s well deserved. But the only fans they seem to have here is a group online who dub themselves “The street team” and show up at all the shows. We used to call them “groupies” in my day. I believe a few of the posts above (Kelley, Jodi) are well advertised members of the groupie group. In the past, this approach has worked for some bands (see Blue October for one). But if Juke Kartel and Toby Rand are aiming to hit it big in the good ole USA, they must polish up their act, put away the sneaker and Tshirts and consistently bring down the house ever night.
Back to the writing, you should cite your resources. You point out “best performance of the night” by reviewers and fans alike” but it may help your credibility to cite what reviewer’s said that.
Please remember, when you review, review the music, the appearance, the impact, not just how you feel about them as a fan.
Cheers!
Kelley | 3/4/2007, 8:08 am EST
I went to the show and was BLOWN AWAY by how amazing Juke Kartel was as well. My fists were pumping and I was screaming like a 12 year old when Toby reached out and grabbed my hand in Arizona….
I couldn’t agree with you more about how much better they were than Supernova….the strobe lights and amplified sound of Supernova did nothing but gave me a headache. I left and lo and behold…found the Juke Kartel boys outside signing autographs….for over two hours!!
Their amazing talent and humility blows me away. Each member of that band is an incredible performer as well as kind and humble human beings. How refreshing….and how rare.
Anonymous | 3/3/2007, 11:20 pm EST
I loved this review. These guys are the best. I know many great things are in store for them. They give it their all on stage.
Debby | 3/3/2007, 9:29 pm EST

Juke Kartel is the best Rock n Roll band to come around in years! Their music is amazing & their live performance is incredible. If you have not heard of them, you must check them out.

Juke Kartel is the whole package! They have a mission in life and they are out to complete it! They are talented, high energy, positive, fun, tight, love their fans, and to top it all off they are simply beautiful! Once again Juke Kartel is the whole PACKAGE!
marybeth | 3/3/2007, 5:48 am EST
Paula’s review is spot on. Juke Kartel will be one of the most successful groups of 2007. They are what is best about rock! Talented artists and they are the benchmark of how treat fans. what a great group of guys.
