“I’m From Rolling Stone” Writing Contest: Assignment Seven

On last night’s show, “Lupe and Other Fiascoes,” the contestants were all asked to pitch a subject for the magazine’s “Breaking” section.

Your assignment is the same: select a group or artist that you think is on the cusp of breaking big. Provide a mini-bio, describe the sound, provide empirical data to support your claim (touring stats, radio play, MTV presence, huge underground following, etc.)…and do it all in 300 words or less.

Now is probably not the time to make a case for your brother Danny’s basement balalaika collective. It’s also not necessary for you to LIKE the music you pitch — although it never hurts. You challenge is to convince us that an unsung group or artist has the potential for mainstream success.

Entries are due no later than this Friday at noon EST. Submit them here. In addition to snagging a First Act SFA Edition Lola CE120 guitar and a Rhapsody Sansa, you’ll get the chance to have your work published in the magazine.

Check back here Wednesday and find out who won last week’s contest.

I missed the deadline but I wanted to post this anyway. Everyone should know about this band!
_______________________ _________

In December of 2006, Dead Moon did the something that all but guarantees they will soon rocket to fame: They broke up. The garage-rock icons from Clackamas, Oregon (husband and wife Fred and Toody Cole along with drummer Andrew Loomis) labored in squalor and virtual anonymity for nearly twenty years, crafting raw and abrasively honest rock n’ roll within the most stringent DIY parameters imaginable. On a vintage mono-lathe (the very one that the Kingsmen used to cut “Louie, Louie”) and inside a house the Coles built by hand, Dead Moon crafted countless 7” singles and a dozen full-lengths. Fred’s voice (a raspy amalgam of Neil Young and Bon Scott) and stripped-wire guitar playing were perfectly complimented by the thunderous rhythm of Toody’s bass and Loomis’ militant percussion. The sound of these three rock survivors is crushingly unrefined and immediate, ripe to explode in a musical landscape where neo-garage minimalism is powering the careers of many younger bands (the White Stripes, the Black Keys, Death From Above 1979).

2006 saw the release of a 2-disc Dead Moon retrospective on Sub Pop, as well as a feature-length documentary on the band and their small but rapid cult of fans. Seattle Weekly featured a cover story labeling Dead Moon as “the most highly regarded Northwest band you’ve never heard of.” Dead Moon’s popularity was at an all-time high, and then came the announcement no one anticipated: retirement. But is that the end of the Dead Moon story? To quote Fred Cole, “the candle is still burning.” Dead Moon now joins the company of the New York Dolls and the MC5; bands that cast a long shadow even though the light was never on them. Watch out for Dead Moon shirts to begin lining the windows of Hot Topic.

that blond chic gave herself that stupid necklace.
and magazines and media always try to make something bigger out of thin air and if you are on MTV your famous or almost famous. No one writing about you is going to make you famous. Writers for big magazines have blown up heads the size of killer whales. Can’t believe the things people say to get you to read their magazines.

Breezy | 3/2/2007, 3:23 am EST

You know the blonde chic is really beginning to piss the hell outta me. They said that tehy didn’t want her to use the alias Jagger for a big name music mag.. I get that thats fine, but she jsut kept going on AND ON. It is a simple thing and she needs to get over herself, unless she legally changed her name it means nothing.

That ‘I’m Like a Lawyer’ song is pretty damn good sans the lyrics. Shame the release of ‘Hum Hallelujah’ is practically a national tragedy.
