“I’m From Rolling Stone” Writing Contest: Assignment Six

You watched Sunday night’s episode of “I’m From Rolling Stone.” You laughed as Colin and Pete ran around Lollapalooza like maniacs. You cried (or at least sniffled) watching Russell undermine himself. You smiled/cringed/squirmed with discomfort listening to Krish interview Snoop Dogg. Now it’s time to join the party.

Assignment six: Choose any new album that’s been released in the U.S. this year (as in since January 1, 2007) and write a 300-word review. Remember: This is not merely a thought piece. And: You are not Lester Bangs. Vivid musical description, knowledge of the genre and/or the artists’ previous catalogue and a definitive point of view will help your cause. Entries are due no later than noon EST this Friday. Submit them here and you could win a Rhapsody Sansa, a First Act SFA Edition Lola CE120 guitar and the respect of all your friends. (No guarantees on that last bit.)

Check back here tomorrow and find out who won last week’s contest!

Nice site!

beatlegirl61 | 2/28/2007, 8:41 am EST

I have to agree with Various Artists on the 10 finalists. I
feel like I got lost…somewhere down the line! Can’t really compalin though, everyone has a different writing style and plus…there really wasn’t much to choose from! But I definitely feel like we’re all NOT being read…That’s a given!

“I totally agree that the reviews were really bad. they seem to lack formal writing education. I see simple errors and no-nos. I wish I heard about the contest before the deadline. I don’t want to sound cocky, but I’d blow these people away…”

No, you wouldn’t, because the writing they’re looking for is exactly what they’re choosing. They care more about edginess than technical perfection.

I’m so thrilled about this next contest–this topic is way better. I’m a little worried, however, about who the next could-be writers will say is ‘America’s next big star.’ Atleast one thing is guaranteed: no reviews on Fall Out Boy!

I totally agree that the reviews were really bad. they seem to lack formal writing education. I see simple errors and no-nos. I wish I heard about the contest before the deadline. I don’t want to sound cocky, but I’d blow these people away… not to mention that the reviewers of fall out boy don’t know enough about the band or albums (not sure about the rest of the reviews).

Various Artists | 2/25/2007, 2:13 am EST

Don’t be too hard, Liz. Some of the winners had some sharp lines. That said… I suspect that by only picking ten, RS is indicating that they’re getting a bit tired with this contest. Which might suggest that just like American Idol… not all the contestants are being listened to/read. Just an idea.

Liz | 2/24/2007, 4:57 pm EST

I’m late posting to this contest, considering how it’s past the due date but, hey, I’m here to inform all of you who are still posting: the top winners have sucked unbelievably. Not only has the music of their chosen artists been a complete and utter atrocity, the writing complimented it beautifully. Maybe it’s because the actual talent of America hasn’t released anything yet…or maybe it’s because the writers of America don’t have any. Who knows?

John Heckman Wright | 2/23/2007, 3:59 pm EST

I agree with T.S. on this one… Stop bitching. It is RS’s magazine and they can do what they want. If you don’t like the rules then don’t enter, it’s that simple. If you WERE on staff you would have to write about whatever comes across your desk, so if you can’t write about something released this year you shouldn’t be interested anyway.

T.S. Brown | 2/23/2007, 12:05 pm EST

I am completely baffeled that you people are complaining about the stipulations for the contest. You have to be kidding me! Rolling Stone is giving you the opportunity to have to words read just pick an album and write the F**king review, cry babies!

matt | 2/23/2007, 2:49 am EST

I really hope that there is a tie involving a resident of Wisconsin. That would be flippin’ awesome. R.S. would have to give TWO internships to us kids!

drummer4life | 2/22/2007, 7:29 pm EST

hey mordy why are u sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooooo

nice?

Jimmi Stone | 2/22/2007, 4:06 pm EST

Umm…I’ll write it but…
that’s all we can win?:(

Tim | 2/22/2007, 2:21 pm EST

Mordy, I chose something else because I didn’t have the forethought to read the instructions. Disqualified myself from the first round for the same reason, so I should’ve known better. Thanks for getting back to me though. Good luck again this week.

Mordy | 2/22/2007, 1:37 pm EST

In case anyone else was wondering, I just confirmed that it’s fine to write about EP’s. (That means you can review the Bright Eye’s album, all you emo-hipsters.)

beatlegirl61 | 2/22/2007, 8:16 am EST

UGH…Not many GOOD releases this year to write about (so far)

RS, Do you mean THIS Friday? 2/23??
Thanks…I guess I’ll get on it!

Mordy | 2/21/2007, 8:49 pm EST

Aggravated and peeps, I think I could list 40-50 albums that came out thus far this year. A lack of albums shouldn’t be a problem.

Agree with "Aggravated" | 2/21/2007, 8:16 pm EST

HELLO??? It’s February!!!! “so far this year” is about ten minutes or so……

Mordy | 2/21/2007, 4:53 pm EST

Also, Tim, IMHO, Lily Allen should count. The rules stipulate it has to be released in the US since January. The 2006 release of Allen was only in the UK. So you should be fine.

Mordy | 2/21/2007, 4:47 pm EST

RS, how about EP releases? Can we review those?

Gerard Way Obessesed | 2/21/2007, 4:44 pm EST

The only new album I’ve bought this year is Fall Out Boy, and it sucks.
So I’m going to write about how much it sucks.

CDP | 2/21/2007, 11:26 am EST

Are you guys really going to make everybody wait until Thursday because Monday was President’s Day? Or was this just not updated today?

Tim | 2/21/2007, 10:52 am EST

Does Lily Allen count since it was a 2006 UK release?

Hunter | 2/21/2007, 3:00 am EST

Under the Influence of Giants? Really? I saw that band live and wow…did they ever suck. Totally boring except for the synth flourishes–which were prerecorded.

Travis | 2/21/2007, 2:29 am EST

Deerhunter, Deerhoof, The Shins. . . there’s 3 sick “indie” bands to hit. Also, The Good, The Bad and The Queen are pretty good, and Lily Allen’s annoying ass dropped an album too. Funny no good hip hop has came out since Clipse, what a classic.

Anonymous | 2/21/2007, 2:19 am EST

There’s gonna be a lot of Fall Out Boy reviews. Not like its a bad album, I’m just saying, thats what is gonna happen. Good luck to everyone

Anonymous | 2/21/2007, 1:15 am EST

I just wrote one on Neon Bible

craig | 2/20/2007, 6:59 pm EST

i agree with previous commenters

i think that this should at least include a reasonable range of dates. i suggest no earlier than november 1st 2006
would that really cause that many problems?

Danielle | 2/20/2007, 6:31 pm EST

Now this! This I can do!

Hmmm…. what has been released!

Aggravated | 2/20/2007, 5:47 pm EST

Haha, the kicker was calling me “sweet pea.” Well done, sir.

Andrew Miller | 2/20/2007, 12:57 pm EST

Oh, cry about it. What, as a music reviewer you would not review albums because they were not “good releases.” That’s the point of the job, buddy. You don’t wait around for the 5-star release. You slap a 2-star on the junk and justify it. If you refuse to review because the music isn’t good, maybe this isn’t your milk and cookies, sweet pea.

Aggravated | 2/20/2007, 12:26 pm EST

There haven’t been any good releases yet this year. Why don’t you postpone this until April 18th to give everyone a day to listen to the new Nine Inch Nails, should nothing worthwhile come out until then. Last year saw amazing releases from Tool, John Legend, Placebo, Kill Hannah, Muse, Neil Diamond, Mastodon, Shiny Toy Guns, Wolfmother, Godsmack, The Mars Volta, and Under the Influence of Giants. This year we have had an overrated release from Norah Jones and an overbought followup from Fall Out Boy. Why don’t we wait for some good music and let the reviews place an emphasis on the good music rather than the unjustifiable garbage polluting the first two months of 2007?
