We Have a Winner: Andrew Miller Nails Assignment #2
Twenty-two-year-old Andrew Miller from Mankato, Minnesota, scored top honors in the second installment of our “I’m From Rolling Stone” writing contest, in which we asked folks to submit ten incisive questions for a (living) band or artist of their choice. The spoils? A brand new First Act guitar and a Rhapsody Sansa MP3 player.
Executive editor Joe Levy, who juried this competition, had this to say:
Andrew Miller [who wrote questions for John Mayer] is the winner. Went to the front of the class with the nicely sneaky question: “Ever purchase a Jessica Simpson album?” Touched on news, music and Mayer’s personal life, and in smart, interesting ways that left room for Mayer to be smart and interesting himself.
Runner Up:
Elyssa Pachico [who submitted questions for Tori Amos]. These questions told a story in themselves, and were the best of the superfan questions.
Didn’t make the winner’s circle? You still have a shot. Enter contest #3, where we ask you to review a live musical performance, here. The deadline is this Friday at noon.

People sure are saying bad things about Rolling Stone in here. Well folks, they’ve had to roll with the times.Everybody wants to keep making money and keep their jobs. What do they do? Get out of the magazine business because the music public has moved on to rap and hiphop- sorry expressions of music in my opinion {just my humble opinion). No body in the general record buying public wants The Who anymore. So Rolling Stone does what they can. Besides I have a soft spot for the mag. Except for that sorry episode of touting “Blair Witch Horror”

RS EMBRACES RAP?? anyways CONGRATS TO ANDREW…JOHN MAYER ANSWERED UR FREAKING QUESTIONS!!! Print it and frame it…thats your prize right there. I like waiting on the world to change song
Rock and roll died in the 70's | 1/28/2007, 2:53 am EST
therefore get a job. Its sad to see people still holding on to delusions that blues based rock guitar music didn’t die in the 70’s and get replaced by FRESH THINGS.
Genres die. And some info for your obsolete views: “Rock n Roll” ended around the mid 60’s. Then Psychedelic Rock, Garage Rock, Glam, Stoner Rock, Hard Rock, Prog, Punk, Alternative, etc.
If you’re still bitching about “drum machines and hip-hop” in 2007, then you’ve clearly failed social darwinism and you are obsolete as a music fan and human being. 30 years of electronica, DJ culture, and hip-hop are apparently not enough for you. By that logic, I should shit on you for not getting down with Wes Montgomery and Artie Shaw. Pre-dating something makes it better, right? Change is bad, eh?
Faggot.

Yeah, RS has always been far-left, but they warmly embrace ‘rap’ and other so-called genres just to make a buck. What a worthless publication. Anything for a dollar, right? Keep debating which porn star is sleeping with which, and which drum machine is generating the most popular song. Of course, you have no control of which song is popular so you just go with the flow.

I cruised over to this website to look up touring dates and I’m amazed at how far this magazine has fallen apart. Strange that it carries on its tradition of being far-left, but happily embraces ‘rap’ and other so-called genres. Hey, wherever the money is right?

I’m jealous! That’s so cool that JM answered the ?s. I just wonder if RS decided who’d win round two based on which artist was most accesible.
Chrys | 1/25/2007, 5:44 pm EST
Wow, I just checked that out, pretty cool that you got your questions answered! Funny, I’m not a JM fan, and don’t know much about him, but he had interesting answers. Some were a little evasive, like the Jessica Simpson one, eh?
Now if only we could get all the artists/bands to answer their interviews, that’d rock.
Congrats!

Andrew’s questions were good and I can’t believe John actually answered them! Lucky bastard!
Andrew Miller | 1/25/2007, 1:28 pm EST
I don’t know, I guess the artist himself seemed cool with’em.
Alan | 1/25/2007, 1:15 pm EST
John Mayer answered the questions on his blog.

the winner interview john mayer!? i’m gonna puke! so i guess my question to connor oberst of “how’s winona and have you helped her steal anything lately” wasnt “nicely sneaky” huh? and i thought i did a good job of “Touch[ing] on news, music and . . . personal life, . . . in smart, interesting way that left room for [oberst] to be smart and interesting himself.” am i jeallous? HELL YES I AM!

I loved these questions. Andrew’s always had a talent in this area and I’m glad he’s blown everyone out of the water. You all can have your own opinions, but the judges called it, and for dang good reason!
Congrats Mr. Miller!

I wasn’t inpressed with some of the questions… The same old tired questions that have been asked a million times before. I was hoping to see something new and different.

Am I supposed to contact someone at rollingstone.com to claim my prize?
MissQueenDionne | 1/24/2007, 4:42 pm EST
CHUCK D questions were good.
K-Fed | 1/24/2007, 3:43 pm EST
Bacon’s just hatin’ because his interview with me wasn’t a finalist. Although, I did think his questions were good. I especially liked it when he asked me if I’d buy Britney’s new album.
Baconballs | 1/24/2007, 2:54 pm EST
I sincerely know nothing about John Mayer, but if anyone asked him if he bought his ex’s record ( I am assuming thats the joke) I bet he’d really think that was a great question. Right before he walked out or punched the dude in his nose.
Hotep | 1/24/2007, 2:14 pm EST
I agree. The questions were adequated at best, and shallow. There was much better work to choose from
Baconballs | 1/24/2007, 2:06 pm EST
gotta say- this is weak. The questions were OK - but its apparent that RS is also looking for other things that they don’t specify in the rules - like interview questions for a no talent moron whitewashed hack that their idiot readers are into now. Iggy Pop? Nas? PE or Stipe? Naahh - not in Rolling Stone. This magazine has turned into a gossip column-oriented Tiger-Beat shitpot.
Travis | 1/24/2007, 12:48 pm EST
BTW, how many people entered?
Travis | 1/24/2007, 12:47 pm EST
Good job dude, enjoy that guitar. Your interview fit the RS blueprint real well. AND . . . for anyone who bitches about the pick, take it like a team player and have some class. Everyone thinks their questions were better, so please. . . go be productive somewhere else.
joe | 1/24/2007, 12:35 pm EST
I really think the Chuck D questions were the best out of this group.
until next time
tina_t | 1/24/2007, 12:09 pm EST
I’m sorry, but the judge really messed this one up. The Iggy Pop questions were far and away the most creative and the ones that I’d really like to see answered. Too bad.
