Assignment Two Finalist: Andrew Miller - 10 Questions for John Mayer

Think you can do better? Prove it, by entering our our contest. Win prizes and get your work published. We’ll announce week three’s assignment Monday, 12:00 p.m. EST.

Note: This is not an official Rolling Stone article. What follows is a submission to the “I’m From Rolling Stone” writing competition.

by Andrew Miller
Age: 22

1. So, now the squeaky clean guy who once penned the lyric “bubble-gum tongue” is a weed enthusiast?

2. Which genre’s artists do you find most intimidating to work with, hip-hop or blues?

3. Fill in the blank: Over the years, I’ve seen my fanbase…

4. You’ve borrowed your guitar services on tracks by the Dixie Chicks and Rob Thomas. Any requests you’ve turned down?

5. You’re set to appear on a track off T.I.’s upcoming album, “T.I.vs. T.I.P.” Compare the recording studio experiences with T.I.’s camp compared to your own. What went on, exactly?

6. Ever purchase a Jessica Simpson album?

7. You’ve been dabbling in stand-up at the Comedy Cellar in NYC. Describe the first set you bombed.

8. Are there any songs you go back and listen and think, “What the hell was that about? That was terrible.”?

9. Your lyrical matter is usually wide-ranging. On “Continuum,” you sing about fear of parents dying (”Stop This Train”), political dissent (”Belief”) and even our generations abundant apathy (”Waiting on the World to Change.”) But what’s something you refuse to sing about?

10. You turn 30 in October. What will be the worst part about seeing your 20s go away?

Logan’s questions were better

Rhyann | 2/2/2007, 11:16 am EST

The questions are as tastey as dessert!

Rachael | 1/26/2007, 5:29 pm EST

Great questions! JM answers them well, too!

~ViViAn~ | 1/25/2007, 10:32 pm EST

Great questions! These are all questions that everyone would like to know. He should win the entire competition! He is great!

Vilmarie | 1/25/2007, 11:59 am EST

If any one cares to know what John’s responses were to these questions, they’re up on his blog at johnmayer.com.

Did he ask questions based on research, or is he a big fan of the artist? Every journalist has to interview people they don’t want to at some point, so the real question should be: How hard was it to come up with these questions? Did it take research? Are you a superfan? Why John Mayer? Why use ‘borrow’? Was that an RS typo, or do they allow their journalists to present them with typos also? Don’t these questions sound Cameron Crowe-ish?
Again, John Mayer? John Mayer? John Mayer?

Great varity! The simpson question is great! Andrew would be great at geting the answers that the public want to here, while still emphasishing on the artist’ talent. Polite way of being shallow and deep. loved it!

rockstarsbaby678 | 1/24/2007, 2:02 pm EST

not bad not bad. i like the simpson question, but the other ones need to be in order.

O | 1/24/2007, 1:36 pm EST

the Chuck Berry interview was much better

yeah, about that | 1/24/2007, 1:21 pm EST

a number of these questions are fluff, some of the question sets featured in the final cut really attempted to connect with the artist and the art, this is mainly just showbiz pap

JM | 1/22/2007, 1:20 pm EST

these questions are awesome…great variety, great knowledge of artist and even better balance between the serious and humorous…absolutely in the RS fashion…pick him, so i can find out the answers from JM!

The G*O*K | 1/21/2007, 12:22 pm EST

Yeah…the best is “#9…#9…#9….”
-30-

Gene | 1/21/2007, 11:59 am EST

Borrow is to take. Lend is to borrow. Pet peeve of mine… (see question 4)

Felicia | 1/21/2007, 5:21 am EST

These are awesome questions that I really want to know about John Mayer. My only suggestion is ask him HOW IN THE HELL HE HOOKED UP WITH ERIC CLAPTON?

Christina | 1/21/2007, 1:57 am EST

Great questions!!

Amanda | 1/20/2007, 11:02 pm EST

Very great questions, they’re not generic. I like how the questions have a humourous tone to them.

Britta | 1/20/2007, 10:59 pm EST

Fabulous questions. Very unique point of view and some very interesting material could come out of this.

Auburn | 1/19/2007, 7:08 pm EST

I could actually hear this conversation happening, and I think Andrew captured the perfect tone to set the mood this artist would respond to.
