The “I’m From Rolling Stone” Writing Competition: Assignment One
All right folks, if you tuned into the first episode of our reality show I’m From Rolling Stone on MTV last night, you’ll know that the six cub reporters competing for a gig as a Rolling Stone writer were given their first assignment: to write a short article about their respective local music scenes. As we mentioned earlier, we’re hosting a competition inviting you to submit your own writing composition using this theme. (Full details, rules and regulations can be found here.) So if you think you’ve got what it takes to nail this assignment, go here and turn in 300 words or less describing your local music scene. On Friday, we’ll select the twenty submissions that we liked best, and on Monday we’ll announce a winner. Each weekly contest closes Friday at noon EST, when we’ll select the finalists for your weekend enjoyment; winner will be announced the following Wednesday. The lucky lad… or lassie named the best writer of the week will walk away with a brand new First Act SFA Edition Lola CE120 guitar, and is eligible to win a gig with RollingStone.com. Need inspiration — or wanna bare your fangs? Check out what our characters turned in last summer.

Just let these contestants be, doing what they love to do..writing. They may be different, counting on the fact that they were raised in different places..hence, Colin solely likes the Indie Rock scene. I find that he’s passionate about what he listens to, like Russell and Krishtine who are passionate about the hyphy movement. Those who hate them are merely envious for the opportunity they were granted over the summer! Obviously, RS were seeking talented writers with their own contributing flavor which inevitably will attract hate from TV viewers because of their peculiar and sometimes bias flavor and taste in music. I dig and respect these contestants because they have kick ass talent and rock!
Greg M. Schwartz | 1/14/2007, 7:07 pm EST
I’m pretty sure that MTV picked the contestants, rather than RS. So the fact that they might not be the best journalistic candidates is no surprise. I’m sure MTV ranked their writing ability well behind their photogenic quality…
Nick Hart aka onelife | 1/14/2007, 2:04 pm EST
wow, I will read the last 10 next time I can’t get to sleep. Does anyone remember when writing was interesting and didn’t follow a all too predictable template?
Where is mine? Why didn’t I make the cut? Because I used profanity?
Tell me whats wrong with “Somehow, somewhere along the beat path, raves turned from powder and ass playgrounds to that guy who should have died naturally long ago, and only kept alive by beat machines and happy medication. Make it stop. I want it to end. I want it to be a porn star, I want to love to watch it suck.” No?
“…now, it’s nem but greasy pervs infesting girls’ washrooms like fecal parasites, hoping to scavenge off the rumored sexual deviancies from back when the scene really was the shit.”
Terrible?
Please, critique me. Tell me why I don’t belong in the finals.
Johnny Hardcock | 1/12/2007, 12:17 pm EST
Based on their writing samples, it appears the contestants where chosen more for their backstory than their ability, but whatev–.
Johnny Hardcock | 1/12/2007, 12:10 pm EST
I don’t get why some resent the idea of discovering talent through a reality show.
However, the writers are suspiciously photogenic. Most writers I know are either pasty-faced neurotics with monitor-burned faces, or Johnny Walker-swilling lounge lizards with spayed collars, Cross pens, and duct-taped notebooks. And most writers don’t have friends.
Unfortunatly the show is the edited like a music video–damn MTV.
eh | 1/12/2007, 10:45 am EST
oh, and the character’s essays fucking suck. Everything that sounds interesting they shit on and the parts they applaud sound downright disturbing. scarry that this is Rolling Stone’s new taste
eh | 1/12/2007, 10:41 am EST
BroobTheSwine, I totally second that, however I do think they had a pretty good effort calling Bush the worst president ever and saying he stole the election, but then again, that kind of shit should be common sense by now. I say that the spirit of Rolling Stone OFFICIALLY died when they totally ignored the work of the Pixies, and remain doing so. HELLO, you fucking idiots, they’re only the band that singly inspired ANYTHING good that came out of 1990- on
BroobTheSwine | 1/12/2007, 5:36 am EST
Look you fucknuts. It’s not about being a good or bad writer, it’s about being a writer who does what that writer is told to do. The truly rebellious spirit of RS is dead, cold, rotting in the ground, in a mass grave that stinks of Dr. T and Bangs, the Good Medicine Man. Now - and I don’t just mean now, I mean for a long time now - it’s about publicity for new bands, and suckassing to the nostalgic greats. News flash: Zeppelin aren’t that GREAT. It’s just these great beer-goggles of history let us fondly fondle ourselves with their mixed memories. FUCK.
There’s no rebellion in RS: that is, not unless that rebellion is sanctioned by masses of teenagers beforehand. If it’s cool, it’s OK. Christ!
This ‘reality tv’ show is a symptom to the disease, and it’s not the problem. It’s just another gangrenous limb of a dead institution.

I have learned through some limited upper division writing classes that those who are the most critical are those who are the most jealous…it makes me sick.

I agree with Horatio! Let’s start a race riot!
Kalin | 1/11/2007, 11:32 pm EST
I agree with “God” and Hunter. This is complete bullshit! Give me a freakin break! This is obviously set up; you have someone to cover every race, religion, sexual orientation and economic class.
Hell I busted my ass in college as a journalism major wrote for the stupid college paper and can tell from the very first show that most of these fools have never even written a decent paper. Seriously the blond chick and her over wordy intro….. gimmie a break
Hunter Stockton Thompson | 1/11/2007, 5:47 pm EST
What in god’s name are you ratfuckers thinking??
God | 1/11/2007, 5:44 pm EST
I hate most of the contestants.
Watching the show and seeing all these assclowns waste their shot just pisses me off.
The girl who wants to take her picture with her grill? And says “for reals?” And doesn’t know who Jann is??
And the self-worshipping poetess?
And the dude who thinks RS sucks and runs around acting like a punk all day?
And that drunk asshole aussie who spent his morning taking shots and didn’t even have his phone when the cameras were there for the distinct reason to record his reception of Jann’s call? Who “isn’t really into journalism” and has never written a thing??
Give me a break, RS! It’s a good thing you’re having this open competition each week on the net.
Chances are, you’ll wind up with someone better through that.

I am happy that there is finally a show about something all of us would KILL to do! Seriously, every one of you, whether you are praising the show or whining about it, would love to be one of these 6 kids. I just hope they don’t blow it! Getting this type of opportunity only happens once…
brbjdl252 | 1/11/2007, 3:33 pm EST
I wouldn’t know what to write about, something mainstream or an enigma? And thinking about haveing 3 months at the Mag! I couldn’t do it, their would be too much competition when it wouldnt be that important to me? TEN .
Chris | 1/11/2007, 4:25 am EST
Why are people talking about selling out, this is a fucking magazine based on pop culture. They’ve been mainstream for years and they write about mainstream America. They sold out when they sold their first issue. Just another business opportunity for them, props to them on a good idea.
Rett | 1/10/2007, 8:17 pm EST
Just watched the first episode on mtv; and I see what Rolling Stone is trying to do. But mtv? I think you could have done better. I think Rolling Stone is one of the better magazines out there right now; and historicaly, probably the most important magazine of the past thirty year. But do you really need more publicity? I think not, thats like Virgin Records doing a reality show on mtv about working in one of their stores so they can get more publicity. Once your at a certain level, you don’t need certain things. Thats all.
Josie_futuremusicjournalist | 1/10/2007, 7:50 pm EST
evey time i see this show i feel like im going to cry becasue i have religously been reading rolling stone since i was 15,and wanted that career. When i go to college this fall i will stop at nothing to make sure i am perfect for this job. Im seeing other people who have the same dream as me try to make it come true, and i dont really know how to react to that.
ken vail jr. | 1/10/2007, 9:34 am EST
I thought that reality show sucked….it seemed calculated how the 6 writers are half women half men, of different races….were they truly the 6 best they could find? So far I wasn’t too impressed w/ the show…and it’s on mtv-which is about as rock and roll these days as the lifetime network.
Julia H. Louisville, KY | 1/10/2007, 1:35 am EST
I’m happy to finally see a cool show about hard working, actual writers on MTV! People passionate about what they do. The dating shows are done, IMO. I think it is absolutely kick ass, and I think it’s long overdue that MTV has shown a more quality driven show, and hey it’s about what? You guessed it, MUSIC! Hence the name Music Television, how ironic! Rock the hell on Rolling Stone!
Candace | 1/9/2007, 1:01 am EST
I’m pretty sure that Rolling Stone went mainstream awhile ago. But, I still want to enter because working at Rolling Stone for three months would be the best three months of my life. Unfortunately, I’m under age.

im soooo happy R.E.M. was inducted. and van halen too
but i can wait till next year when metallica is eligible
or 2014 when nirvana is eligible
what about iron maiden… they should get inducted soon
Highlyte | 1/8/2007, 11:51 pm EST
So I need to be an American to enter this one… Guess, now I have to run into American embassy crying: “I need a political escape in your country!” Is it a big problem to have a foreign writer?
Lorelli | 1/8/2007, 8:41 pm EST
I LOVE RollingStone but a reality T.V show??? I wouldnt exactly call the RollingStone a bunch of “spineless puppets” (*cough*cough* Dave!) but t.v shows??? contests??? it’s questionable…
ash | 1/8/2007, 6:32 pm EST
Ok lets be real please. Although i can agree we are all music enthusiasts, we also live in a get rich-at any costs society!! sure rollingstone is and will always be the voice of legit music-politics-and the representation of pop culture but you forget at the end of the day.. levy needs to pay his bills, he needs to pay for vacations, and if a reality show is the vessel that is needed.. why not!! its not a matter of “selling out” or if the magazine is now becoming mainstream because the moment your magazine becomes read by more than your 4 staff members nad 2 freelancers.. hate to tell you but.. that would make you MAINSTREAM!! so just be quiet and enjoy the show, because Dave, i have a feeling its going to be your quilty pleasure and you already have your 3 submissions ready to send.. so go ahead.. and click send..and shut up!!
Angela | 1/8/2007, 6:20 pm EST
I completely agree with Dave. I was really ashamed and upset with the news of a new reality show; on MTV nonetheless! I really love this magazine too…
Daniel | 1/8/2007, 6:15 pm EST
Reality Show?!
Thats low een for rolling stone, you should be ashamed of how much you have changed….for bad.
Katie | 1/8/2007, 5:37 pm EST
you know when you throw up in your mouth a little bit out of disgust? I did that when I read this.
Grace | 1/8/2007, 4:46 pm EST
No, no, no, i don’t think that RollingStone is actually trying to get a new writer with this show. It’s more for the publicity i’m sure, or just a good business opportunity.
Kate | 1/8/2007, 3:40 pm EST
I would like to do this, but unfortunately, I am under 18. Does anybody know what legal premise prevents minors from writing for magazines? If you know, please do reply.
Re: Dave | 1/8/2007, 3:21 pm EST
Read Matt Taibbi, Dave. Rolling Stone has some of the best political/National Affairs writers out there.
Music writers are another story, though.
Dave | 1/8/2007, 3:17 pm EST
If anyone ever needed proof that RollingStone has sold out, I don’t think there’s any other piece of evidence that is more solid than it’s own reality TV show. Sure it gives young aspiring writers a chance to work at RollingStone. But since when does RollingStone have to hold a contest to get new, good writers? Oh yeah, I forgot, the writers of the past 10 years have been spineless puppets.
