The Definitive Guide to Episode One: First Day at the Office

I'm From Rolling StoneLast summer more than 2,000 aspiring rock journalists applied for the opportunity to be a summer associate at Rolling Stone. Six finalists were selected. At the end of the summer, one of the six writers would be awarded a position as a contributing editor for Rolling Stone.

MEET THE SIX

Camera crews visit all six finalists as they get the news that they’ve been selected for their summer jobs at Rolling Stone. The first stop is Brooklyn, New York, the home of 26-year-old New York–native/slam poet/working journalist Tika Milan, who sits in her apartment with two friends awaiting the call. Rolling Stone founder and editor in chief Jann Wenner calls to inform Tika that she’s in and needs to present herself at Rolling Stone’s midtown offices in two days.

Next up is the college dorm of Australian-born U.C. Berkeley senior and token beefcake Pete Maiden, who appears more concerned about watching a football game and drinking with buddies than whether or not he’s gotten the gig. Busy slamming beers with his friends, Pete misses Jann’s first call.

Pint-size grillz-sporting hip-hop fanatic Krishtine DeLeon is in her jammies in her San Francisco apartment when she gets Jann’s call. Despite expressing genuine excitement at the news, Krish inadvertently commits the cardinal sin of mispronouncing Jann’s name and asks him to spell it. He gives her a pass but tells her she’ll have the name tattooed on her arm by the end of her Rolling Stone stint.

Surrounded by friends in his Los Angeles apartment, scruffy indie-rock dude and UCLA student Colin Stutz is discussing his life-long dream of writing for Rolling Stone while he cooks an omelet, and is amply stoked when Jann rings him to tell him he’s coming to New York.

Jann makes another vain attempt to reach Pete, who is wrestling with his bros and misses the call again.

Pretty blond California girl Krystal Simpson, 22, and her boyfriend sit in her bedroom — a space plastered with vintage posters and band photos. It’s clear Krystal is a classic-rock fanatic. When she gets Jann’s call telling her she’s got the gig, she informs him that talking to him is better than talking to the president. She hangs up and warns her boyfriend that during her RS stint, she might run off with Steven Tyler.

Russell Morse hangs out on the corner in San Fran with friends, who question whether or not working for Rolling Stone will compromise his street cred. Establishing himself early on as a prankster with attitude, he kids that he doesn’t really want the position when Jann calls to congratulate him. He tells Jann to Google him.

Pete finally answers Jann’s call. Immediately after getting the news he pops open a bottle of champagne and sets out to get even drunker.

FIRST ASSIGNMENT

Colin receives an email from RS editor Joe Levy outlining his first writing assignment — a 2,000 word story about his local music scene, due in two days.

Russell gives some of his background — he dropped out of high school at age 15 and was institutionalized. He began writing for a news service while in juvenile hall. Russell sits with a friend in a local bar discussing what it means to be given the opportunity to write for Rolling Stone and expresses concern that his behavioral problems might get in the way. He receives his assignment from Joe and heaves a sigh at the prospect of having to report to a professional editor.

Russell breaks out his reporter’s notebook and tools around Oakland interviewing rappers Beeda Weeda and J Stalin about the Bay Area Hyphy scene.

Back in Brooklyn, Tika discusses the obstacles facing her as a young black lesbian striving to make it as a writer. She explores the socio-political climate in her hometown of Buffalo and its impact on the music scene there.

Pete talks about his background as an athlete and sociology major without much experience writing. He writes five lines of his assignment and then goes out to a bar with friends to celebrate his upcoming trip.

Krish talks about growing up in a low-income immigrant family and her responsibility to make it in the field of journalism. She tells her Filipino mother that she’s going to New York for two and a half months and talks about fulfilling her dreams of making it as a writer so that she can help support her family. Just before she takes off, she throws a party at a local hip-hop club to celebrate.

Krystal goes out for dinner with friends to celebrate her impending trip. She talks about how proud her mother, who died a few months before, would be. Back at her house, she reads a snippet of her assignment to her boyfriend, pleased at the finished product. She says a tearful goodbye and gets on the red-eye to New York.

TOUCH DOWN

The kids arrive in NYC and settle into their dope Gramercy apartments. Thursday morning they brave public transportation to present themselves at the Rolling Stone offices.

They meet with executive editor Joe Levy in the RS boardroom to discuss their responsibilities for the summer. He tells them that they’ll be evaluated as writers, reporters and employees and reiterates that at the end of the summer one of them will come away with a full-time job at Rolling Stone.

Joe then meets with each of the kids to discuss their assignments. All but Russell get major revisions: Krystal is told her writing is too florid, Tika is guilty of “burying her lede,” Krish fails to describe how the music she’s writing about actually sounds, Colin uses too many clichés and Pete’s piece lacks focus. He admits to Joe that he wrote his while drunk.

THE BIG QUESTION

Which character is taking the early lead?

Its bout time they show the raw talent of a fine black butch stud lesbian up in chere. She’s smart and humble and dedicated I think she can win.

I read Tika’s article pretty damn good for a 26 year old girl. That was good you got the hiphop, that is not your typical homophobic, sexist, mysogynist,v iolence hiphop. That made it even more challenging. Check out the independent film HIPHOP: BEYOND RYTHMN AND BEATS by Brian Hurt,African American former football player on PBS CHANNEL, talks about the real deal behind mainstream hiphop. SO Tika you got the hiphop that is coming back to mainstream, because people are aware, you should of seen the turn out and panel discussion for that film in the Bay Area, especially young folks. We are more progressive and get it. Especially the fact with homophobia, “You giving yourselfs away making those comments about gays” How ironic they all want to be only with their boys, and dis women and just pass them on as long as they can be down with their boys, sounds like a little homoerotic stuff going on to me, which they discuss in the film, especially after the interview in the film, with the drag queens, and they let the truth out how alot of these hiphop guys meet the drag queens around the corner to get down with them. Also how corporate america is pushing the violence battle for their own profit. Death to young black males. Also of course Thank god for a beautiful black butch lesbian of color whose smart, humble and sexy too on national mainstream tv. Yes we exist, Im tired of watching the same old boring dime a dozen straight white people all the damn time!Especially white corporate America trying to capitalize on black folks music, which would be all of it cause that’s where music started in Africa, will pretty much most things did. Even salsa “so called latin music” originated from Nigeria, Africa. The beats of hiphop originated from Africa. Just cause black folks aren’t imperialistic. So Europeans be having an inferior complex and have to try to take over and have that fake power for themselves. Fake power, not authentic power which is real power, within yourself, you cant get it from outside yourself. Also trying to program everyone what is beautiful and what is not. Of course European looking boring faces. Ask a real Native American First Nation Lesbian of Color Two Spirted first gay and lesbian before the Europeans came including the spaniards that rape the women. Like once again Russel capitalizeing on it. What?! why are you thanking the Stem Cell Research Center for
Gentrification-Economic Genocide.

I dont think that anyone should be as upset as some of you are about a damn television show…I think that it is a nice change to watch a reality show or any show for that matter that shows people aspiring to make something of themselves…Call me crazy but with all the garbage that gets played on tv I would think that people who appreciated the art of journalism in Rolling Stone would understand how a television show like this one could be very inspiring to anyone with a dream…And are some of you really that pathetic that you would make negative comments about the people in the show who are obviously doing much more to obtain their dream because while you have merely a name you created for a forum, their actual names are getting published in Rolling Stone magazine….

.. | 1/18/2007, 3:06 am EST

MTV… MTV… what can I say?

DrJ | 1/15/2007, 6:38 pm EST

Note to Rolling Stone:
first you decide to do a lame-ass reality show, then you keep publishing “articles” promoting it. Are you guys trying to see just how low you can sink?

Nick Hart aka onelife | 1/14/2007, 2:20 pm EST

Dood, my 300 words was like warrior Spartans killing those finalists’ ill shit. Why can’t writing be rebellious or daring anymore?
Did you notice that almost all the 30 finalists had either 0 or 1 comment? And the crowd goes mild.

You haven’t read the last of me bitches, mark these good. This is a violation. This, is Sparta!

People!! People!! Do you hear yourselves are you serious isn’t this show supposed to depict the skills of these contestants? and we as viewers agreeing to disagree… who is the most skillful, not to slander these poor young, scared, striving for an oportunity jounalists, ridicule them about their over their race, appearance, criminal backgroud, ect…

I do agree with most of you, there are some contestant {if not watching this show and had to judge by their writing} stinks as writers, but if you think about it how many faces do we put with articles we read daily wether it be the news paper or your favorite magazine or the favorite journalist who captured you through their writing and has made you a faithful reader to the publication they write for. If R/S was just airing assignments of these journalist weekly, would we be singing the same tune. We would be judging them on the bases of their writing skills. which is basically the point of this whole show .

Look, the point is that Picasso and Leonardo da Vinci didn’t have Art Degrees either, whom may you people need be reminded were born with natural skills, some people have yet to lays on eyes on them or know their biography ,but yet the world was captured by their work..How i see it, yes so far you have a picasso [RUSELL] and A Leonardo da Vinci [TIKA] who are “skillful writers naturally”. But let’s give the others the oportunity to grow into and seek the art, hopefully through out the show they can learn how to become skillful writers..You never know! one of them might suprise you in the end, i’ve seen crazier things happen. Signing out the Lovely. “Princess”

sorry about that i posted the second by accident before proof reading “lol”

anyone who knows me , know i an’t no writer. : )

Well, is it just me or is it written somewhere that if a young white male says it then its the truth? Maybe Russel will get it. He isn’t afraid of Black people and is willing to capitalize off their culture and write himself into their story. If he doesn’t get it he will survive. After all he is young, white and male.

Krishtine is okay… hip hop asian girl, why not? At least she isn’t a meek little fuck toy object. The gold teeth situation is a bit much.

Krystal will also be just fine if she doesn’t win. She will probably marry an actor or musician. Thin, blond women will never get boring to the media.

Tika seems driven but Black, gay and uh.. not the mainstream idea of pretty. I don’t know how they would sell this to the MTV public. There is now a gay network maybe the demographic is gay men. I can see how she would appeal to them. She didn’t get a lot of screen time either. Maybe they are scared of the American Taliban.

The other two are just boring. I tried to care but I can’t remember their names.

heath | 1/11/2007, 3:28 pm EST

i hope russell wins. i hooked him up with a streets video interview while he was at a festival in chicago. he was so professional and easy going at the same time, that i misunderstood and thought he was already working for rolling stone.

i also hope that i made it on tv ;)

good luck

me | 1/10/2007, 5:21 pm EST

hey rogerfuckingblack, i would like to agree with you except for the fact that once again i say that RS let MTV have too much control over picking the contestants. If RS had picked the most qualified contestants then most of them would be emotionally stable well educated true journalists, not alcoholics, and criminals, just as is MTV”S usual M.O. to get the stupid unintelligent viewwers to watch their programs. I hope that these people truly are great well qualified writers, and maybe I am jumping to conclusions too soon. But I think not

the izza | 1/10/2007, 2:02 pm EST

I would like someone black to win, since RS doesn’t have any black voices besides Toure’. Tika, being black and lesbian, just from the Human Resource/EEOC perspective, stands the best chance, because she’s the triple threat(black, female, gay). These alt-pubs have a helluva time keeping the EEOC numbers afloat, because young white hipsters love black people, but don’t give a damn what they think or write about. Best money is on Tika. Russell will crash and burn, like all good writers do. But basically, they all kinda mostly suck.

rogerfuckingblack | 1/9/2007, 11:05 am EST

I think a reality show is just what RS needs to demonstrate it’s true journalistic crediblity and show that it’s is not just another promotional arm of the corporate-controlled entertainment industry.

P.S.The Strokes are the greatest band ever, Jack White is a genius, and Neil Young is god.

Dee | 1/9/2007, 8:56 am EST

Khristine is awful..she is such a gangsta wanna be..her alone would make me not watch the show..I really like Krystal and Colins personalities but Russell is a front runner just from his experience.Drinker boy is real cute and his friends are even cuter but he will tank like everyone who drinks constantly..he is a bad rep of Aussies…

me | 1/9/2007, 8:22 am EST

i think that RS really let mtv have too much power in this whole deal. These interns could double as real world cast members. Mtv is just looking for unstable people to let them self destruct. Its mtv’s usual plan get the stupidest people to watch their show. God forbid that they put out an intelligent piece of programming. I also fault rolling stone for not controlling mtv in the selection process. Why are most of the cast members from california, and how many of them actually have journalism degrees?

Thomas | 1/9/2007, 5:15 am EST

I first heard about this show one year ago when the application was posted in our journalism school’s mass e-mail of internships/jobs. It sounded cool at first, but MTV’s involvement suggested spectacle rather than real opportunity.

A few months later, the show confirms my fears. Considering the scores of talented journalism students at midwestern schools such as University of Missouri - Columbia, and Northwestern University (in Evanston, IL), it seems odd that Rolling Stone would even bother with anyone with seemingly zero experience in journalism (such as Pete).

MTV typecasting strikes again. I guess it’s too much trouble for MTV to challenge its viewers with anything other than the archetypes that they’re used to. Which is a shame–I’m certain these kids are deeper than the portrayal given to them on TV.

A(to the) MANDA | 1/8/2007, 10:40 pm EST

RUSSELL is by far the best. His essay on the music scene topic was really good. His detail into everything said, as well as his sarcastic and witty, yet true, writing style is ORIGINAL. And sorry to tell you people, but original is just about as good as it gets.

Drew | 1/8/2007, 7:50 pm EST

How come me and the rest of my responsible and passionate writers didn’t know about this gimmicky lame ass excuse for RollingStone to make money, knowing fully well their rag does not sell the way it used to, should, and must? I fail to believe this is even truly happening. I didn’t even know people still wrote for RollingStone! I thought a horde of robotic monkeys programmed by Bill Gates’ au pair wrote all of RollingStone’s content. Damn if I had only known I would have signed up for such a comedic event! You’ll have to let us know when you make it to season seven repeats so I can at least have a chance of getting published on your internet blog as your assistant associate editor of comedic blogs once run by Gleek the Magnificent and his robo pen of utter stupendous journalism!

Go Mcr! | 1/8/2007, 6:13 pm EST

This is who Rolling Stone found!
Their has to be better writers out their.

sum girls | 1/8/2007, 5:54 pm EST

Pete. He’s the only one close to having that Hunter Thompson mentality.

Laura | 1/8/2007, 5:44 pm EST

“Lede” is journalistic jargon. Means the same thing as lead.

Just like “graf” for paragraph.

ash | 1/8/2007, 5:36 pm EST

Hands down.. Russel.. most close to an actual music lover and journalist truly!! he actualy went out there and reserched what he didnt know instead of foolishly writing non sense!! and i love that he was the only one w/out UC education. as a college student an journalism student myself.. i was actually for the first time.. threatned by someone w.out a degree!! i’m pulling for russel!! besides.. the other girl had a grill…. :/

Peter D. | 1/8/2007, 5:24 pm EST

Pete rocked..

LauralovesBrando | 1/8/2007, 4:25 pm EST

Once again, Russell is gorgeous…and talented (according to Joe Levy).

martino | 1/8/2007, 3:18 pm EST

I hate to use the word “retarded”, but..

Sam | 1/8/2007, 2:47 pm EST

PLEASE don’t turn this website in to a big ad for this show. I’m already sick of it. Who the fuck are these people, anyway? Journalists report on topics, they don’t become the topic. Didn’t Lester Bangs say something like that? You should really be ashamed of yourselves.

Damn straight.–but the show is interesting anyway. the blog summary is just unnecessary.

kyguy | 1/8/2007, 1:13 pm EST

PLEASE don’t turn this website in to a big ad for this show. I’m already sick of it. Who the fuck are these people, anyway? Journalists report on topics, they don’t become the topic. Didn’t Lester Bangs say something like that? You should really be ashamed of yourselves.

Francine | 1/8/2007, 1:09 pm EST

I think that Russell is the BEST! I think that guy who talks about being drunk while writing the paper is a joke. Krishtine gets on my LAST nerve, and what’s up with the stupid grill? SO UNPROFESSIONAL! It’s not something that defines her just because she knows all about the hyphy movement, or so she thinks. Tika is also a good choice.

charliemapleton | 1/8/2007, 12:52 pm EST

Tika has that determined,gotta-want-it attitude,Khristine already has that flair and plus talent in freestyling for good measure(”oven mitt wearing Duncan Hines motherf***ers”-Remy,Shawnna,or any other rap chick, watch out,’cause someone’s creepin’ on a come up,and she fine too!),and as for my man Russell, just flat out, unapologetically crude and charismatic-much like a gutter, even more can’t-be-dealt-with-by-authori ty version of Bart Simpson. From what I understand, the whole message of the show is,”Sky’s The Limit”.It should be 100% as great as the first Real World.

Jimmy D. | 1/8/2007, 12:19 pm EST

I would love to work for the man who once fired a guy for panning a Hootie & The Blowfish album. We should all be so lucky. Maybe I’ll get on next season!

Kayla T. | 1/8/2007, 12:13 pm EST

Honestly, I really don’t think Pete is responcible enough for the job. I mean, he missed the two calls the Jann Wenner sent him while he was busy joking around with his friends, so that right there is a bad first impression. Not to mention his being drunk while on his first assignment.
Only time will tell if Pete will finally drop the jokes and get serious.

Corey | 1/8/2007, 11:41 am EST

No, actually, it is “lede” … from a real-world journalist. Here’s more from a RW-journo on the series: http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/ent ertainment/16398650.htm

Frankie | 1/8/2007, 11:22 am EST

First off,I have two problems with this review.

1. The assignment was 500-1000 words.
2. The journalistic term is “burying the lead” not “lede.”

As for the interns:
From what MTV allowed us to see-

Russel did the best job researching his assignment. He went and interviewed local artists and spent time researching the scene.

He needs to check his ego and take the opportunity seriously if he wants a chance at the job.

Tika appears to have a chance but she needs some journalistic training. During her telephone interview she was feeding her source with her own opinion. The source seemed to be agreeing more with Tika than providing reliable information. Joe already addressed her weakness with structure.

Krystal was very proud of her sentence and it did have very pretty imagery but was way too long winded. (Haha kinda like my comment).

Krish and Pete need to rein in on professionalism. Krish was going to hold up production on her ID to grab her grill. Pete: NO WHERE, not Australia, not California, not New York do you ever admit to a co-worker let alone a supervisor that you were drunk while performing a job task.

Where the hell did they find these clowns?

Lobsters | 1/8/2007, 10:48 am EST

My God, you really think anybody gives a shit. You poor fuckers!

Marcos | 1/8/2007, 10:47 am EST

It’s way to early to tell, ladies and gentlemen. Right now MTV is just trying to feed us the image of each contestant. It may seem that Russell and Tika are the most gifted but we don’t and probably won’t be able to see what these writers are truly about.
I question the selection process of these contestants and whether RS had more input that MTV. Right now it just seems as though they are all cliche and token characters.

Wes Scarlett | 1/8/2007, 9:41 am EST

Okay, let me get this straight.

Three people from the Bay Area; two from L.A. and one from New York. Certainly there is some “Coast” bias going on here. Is Rolling Stone trying to imply that the best musical locale, the Midwest(ie.Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland…) is void of journalistic talent? Come on now, the show’s contestants have come of age in but three locations. Very short-sighted to me.

Sorry guys.

Kai | 1/8/2007, 2:43 am EST

Everyone, please, we’ve barely seen anything about their skill as writers, so don’t make assumptions about, “raw talent” just because the editor of RS and MTV want to set up an image of each contestant. It’s too early to tell.

Jenny | 1/8/2007, 1:54 am EST

RUSSEL! If he self-sabotages, Tika will take it. Krishtine just isn’t cut out for Rolling Stone. Colin has a lot of potential, but is too young and inexperienced. Peter is a fucking mess and Krystal is no-talent egomaniac slut.

Holly | 1/8/2007, 12:30 am EST

I think that Russell probably has the best natural ability, but I think that he’s a little too lazy and worried about his self-image to really do well at the job. My money is on Krystal or Colin.

Morris Anisette | 1/8/2007, 12:12 am EST

wasn’t the assignment 500-1000 wds?

LauralovesBrando | 1/7/2007, 11:18 pm EST

Russel is gorgeous and obviously has the most experience and potential.

Mia | 1/7/2007, 11:17 pm EST

To me it is between Russell and Tika. It seems that they would have very different styles of writing but would both keep your attention.

Olivia | 1/7/2007, 10:50 pm EST

It seems that Joe was most impressed with Russell’s writing but he seems like he’s trying too hard to look like a bad ass and taking the opportunity for granted.

Donald | 1/7/2007, 10:41 pm EST

Tika is taking the responsibility of her job most seriously. So far, it seems most of the others are not quite aware (or appreciative) of the opportunity they’ve been given.
