Neil Druckmann, creative director at Naughty Dog on titles like The Last of Us Part II and Uncharted 4, stopped working on games to spend 30 minutes as a games journalist, interviewing Guerrilla Games's Hermen Hulst about the creation of open-world adventure Horizon Zero Dawn. It's a must watch for facts like Horizon Zero Dawn originally had Killzone M82 guns in it and that Uncharted started as "a steampunk, open-world game."
The two chat about the shift from Guerrilla's Killzone series to the lush world of Horizon Zero Dawn. "We wanted to make something that was just beautiful," says Hulst. "With Killzone there's beauty in it to me – it's grim but we kind of call it gritty beauty at the studio – but that was a big part of our decision, we wanted to put the player into a world where you don't want to evacuate away from it, to escape or run away. We wanted to place the player in a world and spend time in it."
He says they see players who don't do anything for a while in the game, instead just ride their robo-horse around the land and explore.
"That sounds very similar to when we were doing Uncharted and to a large extent The Last Of Us," says Druckmann. "The story is so dark we wanted the beauty of the world to be inviting. So, like you were saying, you're compelled to explore it, to appreciate it and that would contrast the more darker themes we're dealing with."
