'Sega Forever' Wants to Make Your Phone a Nostalgic Arcade

Launching with 'Sonic the Hedgehog', 'Comix Zone', 'Altered Beast', 'Kid Chameleon', and 'Phantasy Star II'

Tomorrow a selection of classic games from Sega will be available on your phone as part of the new Sega Forever collection. Sonic the Hedgehog, Comix Zone, Altered Beast, Kid Chameleon and Phantasy Star II will be the first punches to your nostalgia gland, with more to follow every two weeks.

The games will be free, with a $2 option to turn off ads. "As the Sega Forever collection expands through months and years it will include both official emulations and ported games that pan all Sega console eras, each adapted specifically for mobile devices while remaining faithful to the original games," says Sega. Those adaptions will include all mod cons like cloud saves, Bluetooth controller support, and online leaderboards.

Sega has flirted with adapting its biggest games for mobile in the past but this is an all in commitment to the platform. For some it'll be a chance to return to their old favorites but for a lot of smart phone owners it'll be their first experience with golden oldies like Altered Beast. If Sega Forever is a success, it could even spread to consoles too. "We could take it to Xbox Live Arcade or PSN as well," Mike Evans, Sega’s development lead on Sega Forever told The Verge. "The content is evergreen in that sense. Mobile is a great place to start because the platform is ubiquitous."
