Gamers have been hearing his voice for 26 years but most probably wouldn't recognise him if they smashed their cart into him at the grocery store. Charles Martinet is the voice of Nintendo's icon Mario, as well as Luigi, Wario and Waluigi. Right now you'll be hearing him in footage of the new Nintendo Switch game Super Mario Odyssey.
In this video he explains that scoring the audition was a lucky break in 1990 when he caught the end of the auditions and despite knowing nothing about video games won the role.
Mario isn't Martinet's only video game role, you might have seen him in such games as Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time as Orvus, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim as Paarthurnax the dragon and The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age.
