The latest season of Master Of None from Aziz Ansari is now on Netflix, and if you've already been binging you might have spotted some references to Overwatch and Mortal Kombat in episode 4, 'First Date.'
In the episode Dev, played by Ansari, goes out on first dates with women he meets on a Tinder style app called Love At First Sight. One of the dates, Stephanie (played by Aparna Nancherla, who you may have seen on Inside Amy Schumer or Comedy Central's The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail) is into wrestling, Overwatch and film adaptations of classic fighting games. "And then when I got home I watched that movie Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, and then I watched it again," she says. "It's a horrible movie, they killed Johnny Cage in the first scene. Like, really?"
Despite the game's insane popularity – 30 million users and counting – it's not often it gets name-checked in films or movies, so kudos to Ansari and his co-creator Parks and Recreation writer Alan Yang for being ahead of the curve.
Ansari has used games as a basis for comedy in the past. In his 2012 stand up show Aziz Ansari: Dangerously Delicious he riffs on his cousin Harris' Halo habit.
