11. Viewtiful Joe (2003)

Viewtiful Joe drew inspiration not from comics but from Japanese tokusatsu series like Ultraman and Kamen Rider. Its hero was an ordinary nerd dragged into the world of toku quite literally, ripped from a cinema seat and plunged beyond the screen where he gained powers inspired by special effects – which is what “tokusatsu” means – like slow-motion and wire-fu. Though the story was a cliched rescue-the-girlfriend plot, the 2D brawling was compact and bastard-hard.
