1997 was one of the best years ever for video games, and it set the agenda for the next 20. It was right on the cusp of the 3D boom and first-person shooters were still goofy and fun rather than gritty and serious. The PlayStation and the Nintendo 64 were riding high, and over on PC real-time strategy was on the rise while adventure games and RPGs were at the peak of a wave yet to break. Rhythm and sandbox games were taking their first baby steps, and so was online multiplayer – though LANs and living rooms were also being well-served.
