'Bloodbowl' and Beyond: The Most Absurdly Violent Football Games of All Time

Six ultra-violent, post-apocalyptic reinterpretations of football with killer robots and exploding balls

'Pigskin 621 A.D.' from Midway 1990

Pigskin 621 A.D.

Pigskin 621 A.D. was released in the arcades (and Sega Genesis where it was renamed Pigskin Footbrawl) way back in the 1990 by Midway – the company that brought us everything from Mortal Kombat to Joust, Galaga and Robotron – and it's barely a football game. Instead, it's more like an Iron Age version of rugby where you try to run back a kickoff while dodging puddles, bushes, and the other team. But all of that is invalidated because you can throw forward passes during an active play. That’s not football! Or rugby! But hey, maybe Midway was going for historical accuracy, because it’s really hard to imagine post-Roman Britain caring about football mechanics when you're busy fighting off the Normans.
