Oxygen Not Included
Oxygen Not Included comes from quirky indie developer, Klei. The studio has ballooned in recent years to a 35-person indie juggernaut thanks to a string of cult hits. Their headliners, Don't Starve as well as multiplayer variant, Don’t Starve Together, both have millions of users on Steam – easily placing them both among the top indies of all-time. That scratch has helped Klei invest in near-annual releases. Not all of them have quite hit Don’t Starve's commercial heights, but Oxygen Not Included looks like it may have that potential.
It's a base-building survival game about living in space, which, if you're at all familiar with the YouTube/Twitch crowd, means that it's essentially a weaponized viral video game hit. Your goal here is to construct a base so people can survive the unknown horrors of an alien space rock. Most of the time, it's a struggle just to keep folks breathing, but Oxygen Not Included expounds on the premise by pitting you against violent life forms and hazardous scenarios – testing your ability to plan and organize a self-sufficient colony. No doubt you'll have to bury a good chunk of your crew, but don't fret. Klei's signature Invader Zim-inspired aesthetic softens the tragedy and gives the whole ride a tongue-in-cheek tone.
For now, Oxygen Not Included is available on Steam Early Access for $24.99, but it's mostly playable now. Klei wants to refine the game with active feedback from fans.
