50 Most Iconic Video Game Characters of the 21st Century

From a blocky hero beloved by millions to the most memorable monsters and heroes modern games have to offer

Dante from 'Devil May Cry' series22/50

22. Dante

Dante the demon hunter is pretty typical of the smoldering-with-generic-rage school of heroes in terms of personality, but his stylish look is what makes him truly iconic. The white hair offset by the bright red coat is a gift to cosplayers with six-packs. Far from being obnoxious, the cocksure attitude and Nineties-style ironic detachment has a certain appeal too.

Iconic Moment: Acquiring the hellish backpack weapon Lucifer in Devil May Cry 4, Dante uses it to carve up a monolith while flamenco music plays and he makes double entendres about "penetration." At the conclusion of this display a rose appears in his mouth somehow, and we see he has carved the stone into a romantic heart.
