31. Watch Dogs 2
Personality. Humor. A lead character who isn’t dour like a Midwest winter sky. Everything missing from one of the decade’s most overhyped games was finally set right in its sequel, with Marcus Holloway’s hacking-based tour of San Francisco and its suburbs delivering one of the most accomplished open-world experiences of the past few years. Holloway’s street smarts and swagger never turn overbearing, its mission mix grows repetitive but just about carries through for the full 30 hours, and when it’s funny it’s really funny – the self-effacing task where you hack into Ubisoft’s office to release a trailer for an unreleased game is many worlds away from Assassin’s Creed’s sometimes suffocating seriousness.
