40. The Witness
Jonathan Blow's seven-years-in-the-making follow-up to Braid centers on little more than drawing a line on a grid. That’s all you do, puzzle after puzzle, and it’s therefore garnered the full gamut of reactions since its January release. Many love it. Many love to hate it. What almost all have in common is a sense that, even through gnawing frustration, it’s absolutely irresistible. Stranded on a desert island, your only means of opening up paths and unlocking doors is the completion of these maze puzzles. Additional rewards take the form of a succession of beautiful landscapes, and thought-provoking audio excerpts. Divisive, sure, but also it was one of the year's most creative and deeply satisfying challenges.
