47. Severed

"Must-own PS Vita game" isn’t a sentence read often in 2016 – it wasn’t exactly thrown around liberally following the console’s 2011-12 release year either – but DrinkBox Studios' Severed blends one-on-one combat scenarios with dungeon-crawler exploration to earn that unlikely description. One-on-one combat like you’ve never played before, in fact: lead lady Sasha only has one arm, meaning strategic parrying is as critical to progress as slicing and dicing the waves of foes swarming your screen. It’s brilliantly gory and wickedly dark – other characters’ lopped-off parts can be used to upgrade your skills – and, as a potential swan song for Sony’s handheld, worth going out on a limb for. Since its Vita release back in April, it has also been ported to Wii U, Nintendo DS and iOS devices too.
