'Oxenfree' Night School Studio14/50

14. Oxenfree

Oxenfree was the rare horror game that aimed for “creepy” rather than “shocking”. While teenagers getting lost on a spooky island could be the setup for a more traditional story, Oxenfree had no slashers or zombies. Instead it was a tale about eerie radio communications from Somewhere Else. And yet, even without monsters and with a cast who bantered and talked over each other to defuse the tension, Oxenfree built a substantial sense of dread and crafted a story whose most horrifying elements only became clear after it was done.
