28. Gears of War 4
Though set years after Gears of War 3 and with new protagonists, Gears of War 4 took the opportunity to refresh rather than reboot, which was exactly what we wanted. The mainstays of cover-shooting and roadie-running were still here, as were hordes of lummox enemies, but new elements like the sawblade Buzzkill and electrical "windflare" storms changed things up just enough. Being a Gears game the multiplayer was central and regular opportunities to bring in fresh blood are welcome, especially with the chance to cross-play between Xbox One and PC. Gears of War 4 was as solid as its heroes' necks.
