50 Best Games of 2016

From 'Overwatch' and 'Stardew Valley' to 'Mario' and 'Pokémon', the best of a truly excellent year for games

36. Firewatch

Intelligently written and masterfully illustrated – with hues of red, orange and yellow that convey warmth and solitude at once – this Campo Santo-developed gem plays like an interactive novel. You, as Shoshone National Forest fire warden Henry, make decisions and solve problems, but are shepherded along the way by the desire to explore the game’s believable wilderness, and walkie-talkie conversations with funny, flirtatious supervisor Delilah. The tug-of-war between humor and implied horror drives you through Firewatch’s six hour runtime, buoyed by numerous moments of breathtaking tranquility.
